Not all participants in last weekend’s BLM protests were helpful to their cause

It’s been a common refrain during this year of protests: the other side is busing in trouble makers. Well, that may have happened in some cities around the U.S. this year, but most of the participants in last weekend’s protests seem to have been homegrown. That doesn’t mean the organizers of the protests and counterprotests in Bakersfield Friday and Saturday knew everyone they were marching with. The weekend protests got loud and — in at least one documented case — violent, but BPD was there in force to keep it from getting worse. Most of the crowd packed up and ...

TimesOC: Police shooting and protest violence part of upheaval in Orange County

Good morning, and welcome to the TimesOC newsletter. It’s Wednesday, Sept. 30. My name is David Carrillo Peñaloza, the author of the TimesOC newsletter and an editor for Los Angeles Times Community News. Orange County is living through some of the same issues affecting other parts of the country — police shootings and protest violence — and all of it caught on video. This is happening in affluent places like San Clemente and Yorba Linda. A Black homeless man was fatally shot by Orange County sheriff’s deputies during an altercation in San Clemente last Wednesday. Three days later in Yorba ...

Witness: Police ‘Kettle,’ Beat Protesters in New York City

It was the evening of June 4, 10 days after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis that sparked protests across the United States. Activists in her neighborhood had organized a march, like hundreds that had sprung up across the United States to protest police brutality. She had heard about the local protest on Instagram and wanted to participate – in the neighborhood where she was raised and now worked as a teacher. “I felt really comfortable going because it was right in the neighborhood where I live.” When she arrived at the corner of 149th Street and 3rd ...

Texas man accused of shooting at Minneapolis police station

A Texas man who says he is affiliated with the Boogaloo Bois anti-government movement and is suspected of opening fire on a Minneapolis police station during a protest in May is facing riot charges, a federal prosecutor announced Friday. Video shot on the night of May 28 shows a person later identified as Ivan Harrison Hunter firing 13 rounds from a semiautomatic assault-style rifle on the Third Precinct police station while people believed to be looters were inside. U.S. Attorney Erica MacDonald said Friday that she has charged the 26-year-old Hunter, of Boerne, Texas, with traveling across state lines to ...

Arson charges against prominent West Philly activist draw swift rebuke from protest movement

Describing Philadelphia as a city standing on the precipice between “respect for democracy” and “destruction,” U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain on Thursday announced arson charges against four men accused of torching police cars during racial injustice protests this spring and condemned property destruction committed during a second wave of unrest that has gripped the city this week. But the nature of the charges and timing of the arrests — days after the fatal police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr. and within a week of a presidential election in which race and social justice issues have become dominant issues — drew ...

Four men -- including a social studies teacher who is also a prominent outspoken activist -- were named Thursday in a federal indictment related to unrest in Philadelphia days after the police killing of George Floyd. A federal indictment charging a prominent West Philadelphia activist and two others with setting a police car on fire during racial injustice protests this spring was unsealed Thursday, drawing a swift response from protesters and lawyers who questioned the nature and timing of their arrests. Federal Agents Arrest Outspoken Philadelphia Activist Amid Rising Repression of the Black Lives Matter Movement

Early Wednesday morning, federal agents raided the West Philadelphia home of Anthony Smith, an outspoken community activist and a leader in the movement for Black lives in Philadelphia. Smith, 29, was arrested and is being held on multiple Federal charges several hours away from his home at the Allenwood Jail as he and his community struggle to pull together his legal defense. Smith’s arrest comes after nights of community uprising in West Philadelphia after the police killing of Walter Wallace Jr. There have yet to be any charges brought against the officers involved in the shooting and as of yet ...

‘He’s nonviolent’: Friends, family of arrested West Philly activist rally to rebuke federal charges

Federal authorities say West Philadelphia activist Anthony “Ant” Smith, 29, “aided and abetted” in the arson of a Philadelphia police car. His friends and activist peers say the charges are a fabrication — and they gathered en masse Friday morning to “humanize” the man that they believe has been falsely accused as part of a political stunt. “He’s nonviolent,” said Smith’s cousin, Devon Gooden. “He’s never been anyone who would be of the character that sets cars on fire or do anything crazy. I think he speaks with his pen.” Huddled under a gazebo at Malcolm X Park in West ...

Feds go after protesters with rarely used civil disorder law enacted in 1960s

When announcing federal charges against four men accused of torching police cars in Philadelphia during a protest in May, U.S. Attorney William McSwain gave a stark warning: He would use the full force of the federal government against others who cause mayhem. "If you engage in violent civil unrest and commit a federal crime in this district, we will come after you as hard as we can," McSwain, of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, said at a news conference Thursday. "You will go to jail." In addition to the arson charges, federal prosecutors said a grand jury had charged the ...

He is expected to leave custody in the Lehigh Valley on Monday afternoon. Smith still faces federal arson charges that carry a seven-year mandatory minimum sentence, for allegedly adding combustible materials to a car that was already on fire during a protest near City Hall. Defense Attorney Paul Hetznecker said the prosecution is likely to be slowed by the coronavirus backlog in ...

Two weeks after the FBI arrested prominent West Philadelphia activist Anthony Smith for his alleged involvement in the arson of a police vehicle, a federal judge has released Smith on a form of house arrest until trial.
