Did Mugshots Show 13 ‘Antifa Teachers’ Arrested in Portland?

In the summer of 2020, Snopes readers sent us multiple requests to examine the accuracy of a meme shared widely on social media that purported to show the mugshots of 20 individuals allegedly arrested in Portland, Oregon. The meme described the individuals in the mugshots as “Antifa members” and claimed 13 out of the 20 were “teachers in public schools across the country.” The meme began to be shared widely on Twitter in late July, with former New York City Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik adding on Twitter that, “If you’re wondering why your children return from school as radical leftists, ...

Portland protests persist as some bring flashes of violence

More protests are expected in Portland, Oregon, throughout the weekend following violent demonstrations this week that have brought more unrest to the Northwest city. Since George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis protests have occurred nightly for 70 days. Friday night, Portland police declared an unlawful assembly at the Penumbra Kelly public safety building, ordering everyone in the area to leave. Authorities had previously warned people not to trespass on the property. Early Friday morning about 200 people, some wielding homemade shields, clashed with police for the third consecutive night as two other Black Lives Matter rallies proceeded peacefully elsewhere. Democratic ...

An Oregon State Police Trooper was struck in the head by a large rock and suffered a head injury, police said in a release. The trooper’s condition was not immediately known. Some demonstrators filled pool noodles with nails and placed them in the road, causing extensive damage to a patrol vehicle, police said. Protests have erupted across the nation and returned to St. Louis: Here are some of the leaders of the movement

Protests don’t just happen as spontaneous moments. They are planned and executed by an array of people — college students and politicians, lawyers and social workers, medical professionals and blue-collar workers — spurred by outrage, activism or a sense of injustice. Protesters who emerged as leaders six years ago after 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer have in some cases carried their commitment in new directions of influence, including freshman state Rep. Rasheen Aldridge and Cori Bush, the Democratic nominee in the 1st Congressional District after Tuesday’s primary election. Aldridge and Bush have remained ...

Angry, hostile responses to the resurgent Black Lives Matter movement are exposing the intensity of Connecticut’s racial divide

Racial justice protesters pierced the evening air in Somers with cries of “No justice, no peace.” Facing them across Main Street on July 24, a line of counter-protesters brandishing American flags launched jeers and shouts of “All Lives Matter” from the parking lot of Joanna’s, a family restaurant and local fixture. Suddenly, a woman broke out of the ranks of counter-protesters and lurched across the double yellow line. As she advanced toward the Black Lives Matter protesters, the crowd poured into the road. State police on the scene broke up the confrontation that followed and arrested the woman. The intensity ...

Portland protesters rally as arrest of activist draws ire

The arrest during protests in Portland, Oregon, of a Black woman who became a leading activist in the racial justice movement after she was assaulted by a white supremacist three years ago has galvanized local and national Black Lives Matter groups. More demonstrations were planned in the city Monday night, and authorities declared one outside the North Precinct an unlawful assembly, ordering everyone to leave. Portland has seen more than two months of often violent, nightly protests since George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis. Authorities said Demetria Hester, 46, won’t be charged following her arrest early Monday. Hester had been ...

Chicago mayor locks down business district after police shooting sparks looting

Access bridges over the Chicago River were raised again Monday night, cutting off the business district, known as the Loop, from the rest of the city, as social tensions continue to rise after the police shooting of a young black man Sunday afternoon. The police shooting and tense confrontation with residents in the Englewood neighborhood on the city’s south side led to looting overnight at several downtown stores, including in the upscale Magnificent Mile retail area. According to media reports, two people were shot, more than 100 were arrested and 13 police officers injured. Additional police have been deployed and ...

Hundreds of Portland protesters will see their criminal cases dropped as DA announces plan to ‘recognize the right to speak'

Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, leaning on a group of community representatives he called his transition team, announced Tuesday that his office will drop most of the charges filed against protesters in Portland. His prosecutors won’t pursue demonstrators accused of interfering with police, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, escape or harassment if the allegations don’t involve “deliberate’' property damage, theft or force against another person or threats of force, Schmidt said. The office also won’t prosecute people on a riot accusation alone. Prosecutors will proceed with a riot case only if it includes an accompanying allegation of specific property damage ...

GRAPHIC: More arrests after brawl during pro-police rally in Colorado

Two more people were arrested Tuesday in connection with a brawl that broke out during a pro-police rally in northern Colorado over the weekend. The “Back the Blue” rally drew hundreds of people outside the Fort Collins police department Saturday afternoon. Some counter-demonstrators say some of the pro-police rallygoers were the instigators in the melee. However, Fort Collins police chief Jeff Swoboda is standing by his statement that there were aggressors on both sides. He said several people on each side were armed with weapons, including sidearms and brass knuckles, and were looking to get into a fight. He says ...

Peaceful gatherings are flowering in NYC and across the country

On Monday morning, I logged onto Twitter and saw, as a trending topic, that more than 100 people had been arrested in Chicago the night before. This was in response to looting in the city, which in turn had been a response to a police-involved shooting of an African-American man, who is now in the hospital; details of the incident are being investigated. This kind of story, of course, has been tragically common this summer. I thought of what I’d surely see next: more condemnation of “the protests” in this country as violent and destructive, the causes behind them partially ...

Black Lives Matter protesters arrested on US-30 during march for obstructing traffic

People have a lot of questions after three Black Lives Matter protesters were arrested in Warsaw last night. They were marching along US-30. “It’s safe to say there’s going to be a lot of different opinions and speculation about what happened and why it happened," said Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner. The protesters are on a march across several states. They started in Wisconsin and are headed to Washington D.C. to help celebrate the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream' speech. Along the way, they’re continuing to spread the message that Black Lives Matter. ...

TUESDAY PROTEST IN LA MESA STAYS PEACEFUL; MAN BRIEFLY DETAINED AFTER DISPLAYING PEPPER SPRAY AT PROTESTERS

La Mesa police detained but later released a man with alleged ties to a racist group during a Black Lives Matter protest on Tuesday, following a vocal confrontation with activist Tasha Williamson. LMPD led Roger Ogden into the police station in handcuffs for reportedly displaying pepper spray during the altercation. On his blog, Ogden called Williamson a “terrorist” and called her a "liar" at the rally. Williamson denounced Ogden at the rally as a “racist clown.” Each has denied the others claims of racism and inciting terror. Despite verbal barbs, at the August 11 rally and an earlier protest on ...

Letter: Stamford police were right to arrest protesters

As a child growing up you are taught at an early age from your parents and teachers to obey the laws and always listen and respect what a police officer tells you. Sounds simple right? If an officer tells you to put on your seat belt, you do it; if an officer tells you to turn down your loud music, you do it; if an officer tells you to get out of the street because you are blocking traffic and disturbing the peace, you do it. Well, most adults would, however that was not the case this past weekend in ...
