Unions threaten work stoppages amid calls for racial justice

Ahead of Labor Day, unions representing millions across several working-class sectors are threatening to authorize work stoppages in support of the Black Lives Matter movement amid calls for concrete measures that address racial injustice. In a statement first shared with The Associated Press, labor leaders who represent teachers, autoworkers, truck drivers and clerical staff, among others, signaled a willingness Friday to escalate protest tactics to force local and federal lawmakers to take action on policing reform and systemic racism. They said the walkouts, if they were to move forward with them, would last for as long as needed. “The status ...

Portland protests reach 100 consecutive days

As unrest continues in Portland amid 100 straight days of protests, authorities released additional court documents late Friday detailing the moments before the slaying of a right-wing protester last weekend. The documents included shots of security footage that showed the suspect, Michael Forest Reinoehl, ducked into a parking garage and reached toward a pocket or pouch at his waist before emerging to follow the victim, Patriot Prayer supporter Aaron “Jay” Danielson. Danielson was holding bear spray and an expandable baton and had a loaded Glock handgun in a holster at his waist, according to the documents. On Saturday afternoon hundreds ...

D.C. police shooting of Deon Kay spurs calls for change at protests, vigil Saturday

Protests continued in the nation’s capital Saturday for Deon Kay, a young Black man fatally shot by D.C. police this past week after officers saw a gun in his hand during a police chase. Roughly 50 people gathered outside the 7th District police station in Southeast Washington in the early afternoon, chanting the name of the 18-year-old and demanding justice. Later, family and friends gathered near Kay’s home for a vigil to honor his life. Demonstrations over Kay’s death come amid protests nationwide calling for racial justice and decrying violence against Black men and women. In the District, which saw ...

Summer of protest: Chance for change, but obstacles exposed

Memorial Day brought the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, prompting hundreds of thousands of Americans to take to the streets in protest. President Donald Trump called Floyd’s death a “disgrace” and momentum built around policing reform. But by Labor Day, the prospects for federal legislation have evaporated. And Trump is seeking to leverage the violence that has erupted around some of the protests to scare white, suburban voters and encourage them to back his reelection campaign. The three-month stretch between the symbolic kickoff and close of America’s summer has both galvanized broad public support for ...

Night 100: Riot, Molotov cocktail, injuries, 59 arrests

On Saturday, Portland marked the 100th night of protests against police brutality, and the night quickly accelerated into a riot in Southeast Portland with at least two people injured and 59 people arrested, including 16 by the Oregon State Police. A rally and direction action march was organized for Ventura Park Saturday evening. Similar to previous nights, people gathered in the park before deciding on a destination to march to between 8 and 9 p.m. Demonstrators were still in the park when the Portland Police Bureau started making announcements over the LRAD, telling people a march was not permitted and ...

Hundreds of people gathered Monday afternoon in a small town south of Portland for a pro-President Donald Trump vehicle rally — just over a week after member of a far-right group was fatally shot after a Trump caravan went through Oregon's largest city. Later, pro-Trump supporters and counter-protesters clashed in Oregon's capital city of Salem. Vehicles waving flags for Trump, the QAnon conspiracy theory and in support of police gathered at about noon at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. The rally’s organizers said they would drive to toward Salem and most left the caravan before that. A smaller group ...

Watch: Donald Trump tours damage in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following riots

President Donald Trump is diving into the latest eruption in the nation’s reckoning over racial injustice with a trip Tuesday to Kenosha, Wisconsin, over the objections of local leaders. The city has been riven by protests since the Aug. 23 shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man hit seven times in the back by police as he was getting into a car while they were trying to arrest him. On the eve of his visit, Trump defended a teenage supporter accused of fatally shooting two men at a demonstration in Kenosha last week and accused Democrat Joe Biden of siding ...

The so-called revolutionaries who were busted for rioting at a New Afrikan Black Panther Party rally took a break from their yacht club lives and modeling careers to be a part of the mayhem. The seven “comrades” — including wealthy Upper East Sider Clara Kraebber — had their mugshots tweeted out by the NYPD early Wednesday, days after their arrests for smashing storefront windows in the Flatiron District. They were cuffed during a protest organized by the Panthers and the Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement groups condemning the death of Daniel Prude, who was killed while in custody of the Rochester Police ...

Portland Protesters Say Their Lives Were Upended by the Posting of Their Mug Shots on a Conservative Twitter Account

On Aug. 7, Black activist Ragina Gray was tackled by Portland police at a protest and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and interfering with an officer. That same day, conservative Portland activist Andy Ngo shared Gray's name and mug shot on Twitter. "Gray, 30, is charged with interfering with an officer, resisting arrest and more," Ngo wrote on Twitter. "She was arrested at the violent antifa protest in Portland and quickly bailed out. Gray is frequently photographed with kids at protests and rants about white terrorism." The photo was retweeted by 475 people. Twelve nights later, on Aug. 19, ...
