    Background courtesy Sky News:

In 1969, [William James] Vahey was arrested in California on six counts of child molestation. He pled guilty to one count of child molestation and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, followed by five years' probation.

The conviction required Vahey to register with California's sex offender registry for the rest of his life. However, Vahey eluded that requirement. Officials said he had not renewed his registration as a sex offender since 1970. He went on to pursue his teaching career in Nicaragua, the UK, Venezuela, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Iran, Spain, and Lebanon.

His victims are believed to be multinational as many of those schools were attended by the children of American diplomats or military personnel stationed overseas. Vahey coached boys on middle school, varsity boys' basketball, softball, flag football, and soccer, among other things. He also served as activities director, student council adviser, cooking club adviser and forensics adviser. He often accompanied students on cultural studies or sports trips, the FBI said.

Vahey killed himself [in Luverne, Minnesota] two days after agents in Houston sought a warrant to search a computer thumb drive belonging to him.

I'll add to this intro later, I just wanted to get this thread up and available. I've already forward my own contacts to the F.B.I., including someone who should be able to put them in touch with hundreds of alumni from the earliest of Vahey's positions at the long-since-closed American School of Tehran.

An an alumnus of an overseas school, this is very disturbing. Those were very special years and very special schools for most of us. The experience is very different from stateside schools, in that there are very few "bad" students and even fewer loser parents. They were highly productive and motivated learning environments. Instruction in local languages and culture were mandatory, and the field trips were an integral part of the experience for students in the middle-school & high-school years. However, Vahey's kind of abuse on field trips is not the "special" experience we were supposed to be having.

Schools at which William James Vahey is known to have taught AFTER he was jailed for child molestation in California in 1969 include:
    • Tehran American School, Iran, 1972-73
    • American Community School of Beirut, Lebanon, 1973-75
    • American School of Madrid, Spain, 1975-76
    • Passargad School in Ahwaz, Iran, 1976-78
    • American Community School, Athens, Greece, 1978-80
    • Saudi Aramco Schools, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 1980-92
    • Jakarta International School, Indonesia, 1992-2002
    • Escuela Campo Alegre, Caracas, Venezuela, 2002-09
    • Southbank International School, London, 2009-2013
    • American Nicaraguan School, Pista Suburbana, Managua, Nicaragua, 2013-2014
At the London school alone, it's now estimated that he left behind at least 60 victims. That's 60 victims at just one school out of ten in a career that spanned 42 years.

The only bright spot in this from my perspective is that the school I attended is not in this list.
