William Bricker (currently residing in rest home in Grand Traverse County, Michigan), 94, retired physical education teacher (1949 - 1985) at Hubbard Woods School, Winnetka Public Schools District 36, Winnetka, Illinois, "charged with sex acts against 2 children"

Former Winnetka teacher, 94, charged with sex acts against 2 children

Over a career that spanned five decades, William Bricker surrounded himself with children, teaching physical education to generations of kids at Winnetka’s Hubbard Woods School, volunteering as a local Boy Scout leader and spending summers working as a camp counselor.

But Bricker, now 94 and residing in an assisted living facility in Michigan, has seen his twilight years take a dark turn. This week, he was arrested and charged with sex crimes that allegedly took place decades ago against two boys who attended a camp in Wyoming where Bricker was a counselor.

Bricker is accused of taking “immoral and indecent liberties” with both boys on multiple occasions. The alleged molestation of one boy occurred “on or about the summer of 1962,” according to Wyoming court documents, while the other charges date to 1985.

    ...

A spokeswoman for the sheriff in Teton County, Wyo., said the investigation remains active. Police there and in Winnetka confirm that they have received documents that outline assertions by several people, most of them anonymous, that Bricker initiated inappropriate contact with them at the Wyoming camp or during camping trips with Winnetka Boy Scout Troop 18.

Former Winnetka teacher arrested in sexual assault probe

Police in Michigan announced they have arrested former Winnetka Public Schools teacher and Boy Scout leader William Hartwell Bricker in connection with an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of two minors, which took place decades ago in Wyoming. Bricker, 94, was arrested at a rehab center in Michigan on Sept. 23 by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, and remains held in the Grand Traverse County Jail, police said. The arrest was made in conjunction with the Teton County Sheriff’s Office in Wyoming ... The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Bricker was arrested Sept. 23, and had a video arraignment Sept. 25. He is being held without bond while he awaits extradition to Wyoming. According to a Teton County Sheriff’s press release, Bricker faces one count of immoral acts with a child and one count of immoral or indecent acts.

    ...

According to documents filed Sept. 22 in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Teton County, Bricker is being accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in the summer of 1962. The documents also allege a second sexual assault of a boy occurred at the same camp in 1985. According to court records, Bricker served as a “live-in counselor” in 1985, sharing his cabin with “9 to 11 other kids” that summer.

Woman says ex-Winnetka teacher sexually abused her in 1950s

A woman has reported to police in Winnetka that she was molested at Hubbard Woods School decades ago by a teacher who was charged last month with sex crimes against other children. According to a Sept. 29 police report, the woman, who police said is now in her 60s, contacted authorities in Winnetka after learning that retired Hubbard Woods physical education teacher William Bricker was facing extradition to Wyoming, where he has been accused of taking "immoral and indecent liberties" with two boys on multiple occasions at a camp where he worked as a counselor decades ago.

The woman told police about an incident that she believed took place in 1958 at the Winnetka school, when she was part of a small group of girls she described as being selected as Bricker's "favorites." The woman told authorities that Bricker would encourage the girls to sit on his lap during indoor recess. She said that on at least one occasion, Bricker put his hand inside her underwear and "rubbed her buttocks," according to the police report.

Retired teacher in sex case fights extradition

Describing his client as a "94-year-old war hero" with less than six months to live, the attorney for a former Winnetka teacher and Boy Scout leader [William Bricker] has filed a court motion seeking to stop his extradition to Wyoming to face child sex charges.

Attorney Michael D. Lewis said Bricker was recovering from a heart attack when he was arrested last month at a Traverse City, Mich., nursing home, where he was living at the time. Bricker to fight extradition, former student claims abuse

Michael D. Lewis, [William] Bricker’s attorney, said his client suffered a heart attack two months prior to his arrest. In his motion, Lewis states Bricker is “gravely ill” and doctors have given his client less than six months to live. Lewis is seeking to adjourn the extradition proceedings as he claims Bricker is “physically incompetent” and, at times, evidences “extreme confusion.” Bricker is scheduled for an extradition hearing on Oct. 27.

I've excerpted & bulleted the complaints. Please read the entire article to put them in context.

Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Winnetka Teacher Date Back Decades
    • An August 1968 letter from acting superintendent Frank Temmerman describes “irregular behavior on William Bricker’s part.” Temmerman said in his letter that Bricker would return for the the coming school year, but he would not assign Bricker to the after-school sports program at Skokie School because “he would be thrown into contact with the boys who had made allegations against him.”
    • One school official met with Bricker on Nov. 9, 1979, to discuss complaints received by “parents, teachers and youngsters.” Concerns raised included asking Bricker to “minimize the physical contact with students, i.e. sitting on the lap, kissing, etc. I reminded Bill that the old adage, ‘Keep your hands off kids’ was really best,” the letter stated.
    • The letter also expressed concern regarding “bare-breasted pictures of last year’s fifth-grade boys in the hall,” which the author said, “I indicated to Bill that I would find it extremely difficult to defend the photos and that I personally found them to have little to do with the physical education program or the after-school sports program at Hubbard Woods.”
    • In a letter sent to former Supt. Donald Monroe in 1993, a former student claims between 1977 and 1982 they were “sexually abused by William Bricker” and the abuse was of “continuing nature” both during and after school. In his response, Monroe states the letter was “the first notice” of any alleged abuse.
    • On March 7, 1997, District 36 received a Freedom of Information Act request from a former Hubbard Woods student, who attended the school from 1977-82. The student requested Bricker’s personnel files and records related to the former teacher’s job performance. In the letter, the student claims “on numerous occasions, beginning in 1977, I was sexually abused and molested by William Bricker, my physical education teacher” and the abuse “was of a continuing nature and occurred over the course of several years.”
    • In a redacted police report, the victim alleges in 1958, Bricker “picked various girls to sit on his lap during indoor recess,” and claimed Bricker “reached his hand up her dress” one day.

Winnetka teacher drew complaints, never charged

In a recent interview with the Tribune, a man who said he was molested by Bricker during a Boy Scout trip in 1968 described the backlash against his family and a local doctor who he said raised questions about Bricker. That doctor's son, a fellow Scout, also told the Tribune recently of the pressure his family felt, even as other boys stepped forward with similar accusations.

Additionally, the Tribune interviewed three former students at Hubbard Woods School in Winnetka who claim Bricker molested them as children, in one case as early as the mid-1950s.

The new interviews, along with dozens of pages of personnel documents released by Winnetka District 36 since formal charges were brought against Bricker in Wyoming last month, reveal that while some adults sought to limit Bricker's contact with children, he was allowed to continue teaching, leading a local Scout troop and working at the camp in Wyoming where he's now accused of molesting children in 1962 and 1985.

    ...

District records indicate that school officials consulted with their attorney about what to do about Bricker, sent him to a psychiatrist and removed him from an after-school sports program where he would be in contact with boys who had accused him. But he continued teaching, and there are no indications that a criminal investigation was launched. And though Bricker agreed on paper to withdraw from Boy Scout activities, in reality he continued as scoutmaster for at least two more decades, according to school and police records.

According to an Oct. 29 police report, the woman, whose name was not released, told authorities that she was participating in an after-school sports program in the fall of 1979 when teacher William Bricker led her into a shed on the playground, held her by the shoulders and kissed her on the mouth ... The woman in the latest Winnetka police report told local authorities that the alleged kissing incident was reported to school officials at the time by her mother but claimed school officials failed to act on the report. Police also reported that they recently contacted the woman's mother, who said her daughter's report was accurate. The mother confirmed that she had never reported the incident to Winnetka police.
