The relationship has allegedly been going on for six weeks. Oliver said the sheriff’s office was made aware of the allegations on Thursday after being contacted by the girl’s family. Oliver said investigators questioned the 17-year-old girl on Friday before picking Tibbs up at his residence in Hamilton. Investigators said Tibbs admitted to the relationship during questioning. Oliver said the investigation revealed that Tibbs and the female student had kissed and sent text messages to one another while on school property, but no sexual activity had taken place on school grounds. Times Daily: Vina teacher arrested: Man accused of having sex with 17-year-old student (Nov 8 2013) A Vina Elementary School physical education teacher was arrested Friday amid allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old high school student, sheriff’s officials said. Sonny Tibbs, 35, 525 Wakefield St., Hamilton, was arrested at his home Friday and confessed to the charges, said Sgt. Jason Holcomb, an investigator with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Holcomb said Tibbs, a former head girls basketball coach at Vina, is charged with three counts of a school employee having sexual intercourse with a student under 19 years old....“The parents found out about it (Thursday) and we interviewed them and the victim (Friday) morning,” Holcomb said. “After interviewing them, we went to his home and he confessed.” Holcomb said there are no allegations that the two had sex at school, but he added the two reportedly touched each other inappropriately and kissed while on campus. Times Daily: Vina teacher facing student sex charge resigns post (Jan 3 2014) Franklin County school board members accepted a resignation letter from Vina physical education teacher Sonny Tibbs at its meeting Thursday night. Tibbs was charged in November as a school employee having sex with a student under 19 years of age. He has been on leave with pay since his arrest. Superintendent Gary Williams said at the time he would recommend the termination of Tibbs at the board’s next meeting. The board did not meet in December, and Williams received Tibbs’ resignation letter Monday.
