Five years ago he was removed as advisor to the student newspaper after two students wrote an editorial about topless photos that were circulating in the school.

"Dr. Gibson implied I was using the newspaper as a springboard to spread my views," Orosco said in a letter to school board members, adding that, "I believe my job as adviser is to: teach them to write; and teach them to be critical thinkers. The First Amendment is part of my curriculum." Orosco and the newspaper's editorial staff believe his removal is the result of an opinion piece that was published in the newspaper in October. The opinion of two staff writers was written as a commentary about pictures of topless girls at Vacaville High School that surfaced and traveled around campus and the Vacaville area by cell phones last year. The writers of the article, Chelsie DiModica and Taelor Stamm, said they would still run the article even after the controversy of running it in the newspaper.

The Reporter: Vacaville High teacher will resign as part of plea deal (Mar 7 2014)

A Vacaville teacher [Rodney Orosco] accused of sending thousands of text messages to a student accepted a plea deal in Solano County Superior Court on Thursday that will require him to resign from his job as a high school English teacher ... On Thursday, Orosco's defense counsel, Sacramento attorney Jon-Paul Valcarenghi, announced that a plea agreement had been worked out with prosecutors. Orosco was not present at the hearing, but prosecutors indicated that Orosco agreed to plead no contest to two misdemeanor charges of child endangerment and harassing telephone contact. The misdemeanor charge of annoying or molesting a child under 18 was dismissed. The plea agreement will require Orosco to resign from his job with Vacaville Unified School District and permanently surrender his teaching credential. He would also be subject to four years of probation and be required to pay an undetermined amount in restitution.
