Alaska teacher agrees to return to Missouri to face child abuse charges: report

A Missouri man who has been teaching language arts in the Alaska's Northwest Arctic Borough will reportedly return to his home state to face accusations that he raped his adopted child. Owen Melvin Miller, 42, was arrested in the Kiana School in Alaska on Aug. 29 for multiple charges, including child molestation, statutory rape and incest, Alaska Dispatch News reported.

Last year, one of Miller's seven adopted children told a Wasilla police officer that he started doing "inappropriate things to her" in 2002, according to the local broadsheet. This information was reportedly forwarded to Missouri authorities who interviewed two of his other adopted children. They also said they had been neglected and physically abused for years. "They recounted several incidents being locked into the basement, attic or outside," a probable cause statement reads. "The kids would go on average two days without food if they were in trouble."

Kiana teacher accused of sexually abusing adopted child will return to Missouri to face charges

A jailed former Kiana schoolteacher agreed in a Kotzebue court hearing Wednesday to return to Missouri and answer charges he sexually abused his adopted child there. Owen Melvin Miller, 42, was beginning his second year as a high school language arts teachers at the Kiana school, east of Kotzebue in the Northwest Arctic Borough School District, on Aug. 29 when he was called into the principal’s office and arrested by an Alaska State Trooper. Miller was wanted on a Missouri warrant for statutory rape, sodomy, child molestation and incest charges.

    ...

In 2013, one of the children told a Wasilla police officer that Miller had done “inappropriate things to her” for years, starting with a 2002 “marriage ceremony” in Savannah, Missouri, that included sex acts and alcohol, according to a probable cause statement signed by the prosecuting attorney of Andrew County, Missouri. The girl was younger than 14 at the time, according to the charges. It’s not clear what the Wasilla police officer did with the information and how or when it was forward to the Missouri authorities. But a Missouri sheriff’s deputy later interviewed two of the couple’s other children, who said they were physically abused and neglected for years. “They recounted several incidents being locked into the basement, attic or outside. The kids would go on average two days without food if they were in trouble. (Two of the children) would get food by unhinging (another child’s) bedroom door because it was padlocked from the outside. They would crawl through a hole in the wall and sneak into the garage to get food out of the deep freeze,” the probable cause statement says.

KNOM radio reported last week that Miller, his wife and adopted children moved to Alaska in 2010. Miller told KNOM he and his wife divorced and she moved to Wasilla.

    ...

A probable-cause statement from Andrew County, Missouri, says one of the children last year told a Wasilla police officer that Miller had done inappropriate things to her for years, beginning with a 2002 “marriage ceremony” in Savannah, Missouri, which is about an hour north of Kansas City. According to the probable-cause statement, the abuse included sex acts and alcohol.

Miller was wanted in Missouri on a warrant on statutory rape, child molestation, sodomy and incest charges.

The adopted children also “recalled several incidents being locked into the basement, attic or outside,” according to the probable-cause statement, which said the children would go on average two days without food if they got into trouble.
