Lakeland Teacher Charged With Sexual Battery of Student Michael Emmanuel Taveras, 28, of Winter Haven, was arrested late Monday on charges from two separate incidents. According to the arrest report, Taveras raped the 14-year-old female student June 6 and Aug. 11 while she was doing community service at the school in his classroom. Both times, the student was working under Taveras' direct supervision and she had parental consent to be there ... The student told police that during the first incident, Taveras turned off the lights in the classroom, approached her from behind and had sex with her without saying a word, according to the report. She said it was against her will but said she didn't say anything because she was afraid. "We know from our experience working with child victims that they are very reluctant to come forward, especially in situations like this. They're embarrassed and humiliated," Gross said. The second time, Taveras closed the door, had the student perform a sex act on him and had sex with her against her will, the report says. He stopped when he heard the classroom door open.
