A Willits teacher was arrested at her middle school Tuesday on suspicion of repeatedly molesting a girl while coaching a McKinleyville youth soccer team from 2005 through 2007 ... Arcata Police Chief Tom Chapman said the investigation began Dec. 30, when his department received a report from an adult woman who claimed she had been sexually molested by Stewart as a child, while Stewart coached her McKinleyville soccer team. ”It just kind of came to a point in time in (the alleged victim's) life when she felt like she could come forward with the information,” Chapman said, adding that he doesn't know of any event that triggered the alleged victim's contacting his department. The alleged molestation began when the woman was 12 years old, and continued for two years.

A Willits elementary school teacher has been charged with molesting a girl she coached on a youth soccer team in Humboldt County ... Arcata police began their investigation Dec. 30 after the alleged victim, now 18, reported she had been molested by Stewart from 2005 to 2006, beginning when she was 12 years old, police said. At the time, Stewart coached youth soccer in McKinleyville, but the molestation is alleged to have occurred at Stewart's home in Arcata, Chapman said.

A Willits middle school teacher appeared in Humboldt County Superior Court Thursday and pleaded not guilty to a pair of molestation charges stemming from her tenure as a McKinleyville soccer coach. Meghan Alison Stewart, 28, of Willits, has been charged with one count of the continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 and one count of oral copulation of a person under the age of 16. Stewart pleaded not guilty to both charges ... [Arcata Police Department Chief Tom] Chapman said detectives are still working to determine how many separate instances of alleged molestation happened, but he said he felt it was safe to say between 50 and 100. The alleged molestations are believed to have occurred in Stewart's Arcata residence between September 2004 and August 2007.

A Willits middle school teacher facing molestation charges stemming from her tenure as a local soccer coach reportedly confessed to the crime prior to her arrest. Two days before Meghan Alison Stewart, 28, of Willits, was arrested on Jan. 4 and charged with the continuous sexual abuse of a child, Arcata police officers reportedly had the alleged victim in the case, now an 18-year-old woman identified as Jane Doe, call Stewart in a tape-recorded conversation. According to a partial transcript of the phone call included in a declaration in an arrest warrant for Stewart, she admitted to kissing and participating in various specific sexual acts with Jane Doe during the conversation. She also expressed remorse. ”How could you not see it was wrong? You were 21. I was 12,” Jane Doe said, according to the transcript. ”I did see it as wrong,” Stewart reportedly replied.
