A longtime Zionsville Community High School art teacher faces an initial appearance in court next week on child seduction charges involving a 17-year-old student.
Mandy Jared, 33, Carmel, an art teacher at Zionsville since 2002, left her job at the school on the same day in December that the school’s principal, Tim East, was notified of the alleged inappropriate contact with the student, according to a Zionsville school district news release issued Friday. Boone County Prosecutor Todd J. Meyer charged Jared with two felony counts of child seduction, for alleged incidents between Oct. 15 and Nov. 30 at the school.

The investigation began after another teacher discovered online communication between Jared and the student. Jared resigned the same day the student expressed concern about her relationship with her to another teacher. According to the transcript of the probable cause hearing, there were four incidents but Jared is only charged with two that happened in the dark room after school. Jared is alleged to have invited the student to her home where there was also reported to have been an incident.

Mandy Jared, 33, Carmel, has been charged with two felony counts of child seduction involving a female student ... Jared resigned on Dec. 9, the same day that the student expressed concerns about her relationship with Jared to ZCHS teacher Grace Fletcher. Fletcher that same day took a three-page statement from the student to ZCHS Principal Tim East. School officials met with Jared and her teachers’ union representative, and “worked out a deal ... for her to resign immediately,” Zionsville Police Det. Chuck White said in a Feb. 10 probable cause hearing in Superior Court I. In the probable cause hearing, White told Judge Matthew Kincaid that it appeared Jared had physical contact with the student twice, on high school grounds, sometime in late October to mid-November. The victim told White Jared initiated both contacts, the detective testified. White also said Jared invited the victim to her home in Carmel, where “more touching and kissing” occurred. Based on that testimony, Jared could also face a child seduction charge in Hamilton County. Jared’s husband, Brian, was aware his wife “had a(n) ... addiction to this girl,” White testified. “He stated that he had intercepted mails and texts ... where they had talked with each other in reference to their caring about each other.” The student broke off contact after Jared indicated she wanted a deeper, permanent relationship, White said.

Boone Superior Court I Judge Matthew Kincaid ordered Jared, a former Zionsville Community High School art teacher, to one year and 178 days of probation, suspending a 1 1/2-year sentence for child seduction. A second count was dismissed.
