Lawrence County deputies and Murfreesboro police arrested Lavar Jernigan, 35, at a Murfreesboro school Thursday morning and charged him with solicitation of a minor and sexual exploitation of a minor. Jernigan taught band at three Murfreesboro schools.​

The arrest is the result of an investigation in Lawrence County, Tennessee where he assisted the Loretto High School Band on a volunteer basis over an extended period of time. During Jernigan’s stint with Loretto High School, he allegedly pursued a relationship with a minor. The teacher is accused of trying to solicit the girl for sex and sending her sexually explicit messages and photos. Jernigan was released from the Lawrence County Jail shortly after his intake after posting a $20,000 bond.​

A band director for Murfreesboro city schools is in jail after authorities said he had an inappropriate relationship with a Loretto High School student. Lavar Romania Jernigan, 35, of Christiana, Tenn., which is near Murfreesboro, is charged with solicitation of a minor and sexual exploitation of a minor, Lt. Nathan Neese, of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, said Thursday. Jernigan is accused of meeting the girl while he was a band volunteer at Loretto in Lawrence County, Tenn.​

Neese said the relationship between Jernigan and the girl apparently continued after he stopped volunteering with the band. Court officials said Jernigan, who has been suspended from his duties in Murfreesboro, is accused of trying to solicit the girl for sex and sending her sexually explicit messages and photos. Neese said apparently the relationship had been going on for the past few years.​

[Lavar Romania] Jernigan and a minor he allegedly met at a band camp where he was a teacher reportedly had an inappropriate relationship. Detective Roberts recovered a cell phone that Jernigan possessed and upon processing the phone for evidence, multiple images of child pornography were found. The report WGNS obtained on Friday stated, “Once all the evidence was obtained, the case was presented to the Rutherford County Grand Jury. Mr. Jernigan was indicted on 45-counts involving possession of child porn.”​

Murfreesboro Detective Tommy Roberts arrested Lavar R. Jernigan, 35, of Christiana, and charged the former music teacher with 15 counts each of especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor and sexual exploitation of a minor. He is being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $250,000 bond ... The new charges are related to an earlier investigation in Lawrence County that resulted in Jernigan’s arrest in April 2013, Roberts said. The detective said Jernigan’s cell phone was seized in April. “We sent the phone to be processed and it came back with evidence of multiple images of child pornography,” Roberts said.​

Jernigan of Christiana was first brought to the attention of Murfreesboro Police after the Lawrenceburg Sheriff's Department contacted detectives about an alleged illegal involvement between Jernigan and a student in April of 2013.​
