Oh really? Kathleen Jardine, Arizona math teacher turns up drunk to school and continues drinking

Prior to her arrest the Poston Butte High School, San Tan Valley, Arizona math teacher had arrived to school that morning drunk where she proceeded to drink throughout the course of the day until school authorities approached Kathleen Jardine come lunchtime after she continued slurring her words and had by then taking to cursing her students.

Pressed, the teacher would confess she had been drinking the night before. It wasn’t until a probing of the teacher’s personal belongings turned up a half empty bottle of vodka, an empty single serve wine bottle and a bottle of Sunny D (yes the mixer too) orange juice that the teacher also confessed that she had taken to drinking during class.

Kathleen Jardine somehow made it into her classroom and attempted to teach, but then aroused her students’ suspicions by “yelling and cursing” at them. “She just seemed slow,” student Cole McCormick told CBS 5.

Arizona Teacher Arrested For Being Drunk At School Has History Of Drinking On The Job

An Arizona high school teacher who was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly being drunk at school has a history of drinking on the job, something a “rigorous” background check from the school district failed to uncover. Kathleen Jardine, 57, was found with a bottle of alcohol in her math classroom at Poston Butte High School. Her blood alcohol was twice the legal limit, a Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman told CBS5 News. A student in her class called the office claiming that Jardine was intoxicated and yelling at students ... Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says Jardine lost another teaching job over the same behavior. In 2011, she was fired from Belen High School in New Mexico for drinking at school.

Hiring policies reviewed after teacher accused of being drunk at school

The Florence Unified School Board President says their hiring policies and practices are under review, after evidence came out that a teacher who was accused of getting drunk at school was fired after similar accusations in another district.
Teacher Kathleen Jardine, 57, was cited for drinking in public, after her students at Poston Butte High School reported her to the school resource officer Wednesday.

    ...

Fewer than 24 hours before that incident, Gilbert police officers received a call about a person driving erratically in a school zone outside of Perry High School. The driver, identified as Jardine, was arrested for super extreme DUI. Officers say she blew a .257 on a portable breath test, which is more than three times the legal limit.

That arrest happened at 3:40 in the afternoon. Jardine supposedly told police she was heading home from work. Her school day at Poston Butte High 13 miles away ended at 2:20, only a little more than an hour before her arrest. Sheriff Paul Babeu says it "takes a lot of work" to reach such an extreme blood alcohol content, leading Florence Unified School District authorities to now investigate the timing of her drinking to determine whether she was intoxicated in the classroom on that day as well.

Personnel file, 911 call released on teacher accused of drinking in class

According to the personnel file released to 3TV, Jardine answered "no" when asked if she was ever fired from a job or resigned to prevent being fired. Three years prior to the incident at Poston Butte High last week when school resource officers say Jardine came to school drunk with bottles of vodka and wine in her classroom, the math teacher was caught drunk at school in New Mexico. She was terminated for her actions. Jardine does not disclose her history on her application to the Florence Unified School District. "It's of concern because that would've been a major red flag for us in the application process," says district spokesperson Richard Franco.

    ...

Also part of consideration will be Jardine's arrest from the day prior to the incident at school. After a 911 caller reported a driver swerving in a school zone, police in Gilbert pulled Jardine over for suspicion of DUI. Newly released reports show that Jardine failed the field sobriety tests. The officer says that Jardine stumbled through the walk and turn test. While counting her steps out loud, Jardine supposedly turned to the officer at one point and asked him, "Did I run out of numbers?" Police searched Jardine's SUV and say they discovered a bottle of peppermint schnapps, half-empty, with the top screwed on crooked. When the officer asked Jardine if she had been drinking and driving, she allegedly said "I only drank it when I was stopped."
