Prosecutors presented new evidence at trial, claiming not only did Cawthorne send naked pictures of herself to a 17 year-old student, she had sex with him too. The inappropriate relationship began in March 2012 when the victim, a student in Cawthorne's study hall class at William Campbell Combined school, asked for her cell phone number. Prosecutors say in the next two weeks they sent naked pictures to each other, and eventually drove to a field where the two had sexual intercourse.
Union Star: Former teacher pleads to charges (Jan 24 2013) Kathleen Cawthorne, 32, of Rustburg, pleaded no contest to one count of indecent liberties with a child and three counts of electronic solicitation of a minor ... Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Brooke Willse-Gaddy told the court that if the case had gone to trial, evidence would have shown that Cawthorne had the victim, a male student younger than 18, in study hall. Willse-Gaddy said the student asked Cawthorne for her phone number, and the two began texting each other. The texts were of a sexual nature. Willse-Gaddy said that on March 13, 2012, the two met at a store in Campbell County and rode around together in the student’s car, and the two had sexual intercourse. Cawthorne also sent photos of herself to the student, Willse-Gaddy said. Another teacher was shown the photos on another student’s phone and went to the principal, who notified the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, the prosecutor said. Willse-Gaddy said that when the principal confronted Cawthorne, she admitted that the photos were of her and that she had allowed the student to touch her in private areas. But she denied having sexual intercourse with the student.
