Substitute accused of having sex with teen

Limestone County Superintendent Thomas Sisk said [Karen Dyan] Holt was the teen’s substitute teacher in an eighth-grade math class this past school year at Clements. Sheriff Mike Blakely said the teen told investigators he made a connection with Holt “because she was real easy to talk to.” The sheriff said the two bumped into each other at Wal-Mart this summer and then became Facebook friends.

Blakely said Holt and the teen “met behind a house in the neighborhood and had sex” Tuesday. Holt’s home is between Clements High and Blue Springs Elementary schools on U.S. 72. After viewing the duo’s Facebook interaction, the parents became concerned about the “inappropriate relationship,” Blakely said. The parents filed a complaint Wednesday with his department. The sheriff said the two admitted to the tryst during interviews with sheriff’s investigator Leslie Ramsey. He said it is believed that Tuesday night was the only time they had sex.​

Substitute's relationship with teen discovered by mom on Facebook

According to the sheriff's office, Holt met the teen when she was his substitute teacher last year at Clements High School ... Authorities said the woman ran into the 15-year-old at a local department store and began communicating after that. They said there is no evidence that any crime took place while school was in session. Authorities said sexual activity between the two took place two nights ago, next door to the boy's house.

"After they started Facebooking, both parties apparently sent some sexually-explicit photos to each other," Sheriff Blakely said. "The parents got suspicious when the lady had gone to the 15-year-old's neighborhood and met him behind the neighbor's house, that was unoccupied." Investigators said the boy's mother began looking for clues online after learning her son had left the house and discovering a van parked outside the unoccupied home. The next day, she learned of the pair's Facebook contact; she pretended to be her son online, and then revealed to Holt who she was, then went to the authorities.​

Ex-Limestone substitute teacher pleads guilty to sodomy
A former substitute teacher accused of having sexual contact with a 15-year-old boy at Clements High School in 2014 has pleaded guilty to second-degree sodomy to avoid prison time.

Karen Dyan Holt, 38, of 7142 U.S. 72, Athens — who was facing trial this week on charges of second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy and second-degree sexual abuse — accepted the plea offer Thursday in Limestone County Circuit Court, Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said Monday.


Under the agreement, Holt was sentenced to two years in prison but the prison time was suspended and she was ordered to serve two years of unsupervised probation. She will also be required to register with local and state law enforcement as a convicted sex offender. Registration will require her to report where she lives and works and to adhere to yearly updates of this and other information.
