Waverly woman accused of child abuse pleads not guilty

A Waverly dance teacher accused of child sexual abuse has pleaded not guilty to charges that could send her to state prison for at least 10 years to life, if she's convicted. Julie Kay Werkheiser, 38, is accused of abusing two children who were her dance students between 2004 and 2007 at Studio J Dance on Broad Street in the village of Waverly, according to police.

    ...

Waverly police Sgt. Mark Mitchell said the investigation leading to Werkheiser's arrest began in April, after abuse allegations were reported to New York state police. Troopers relayed that information to Waverly police, who took over the case. Both children were between the ages of 6 and 8 when the alleged abuse took place, according to Mitchell. The grand jury indictment prompted a warrant for her arrest and she was taken into custody at her home, police said.

A former Waverly dance teacher will spend 11 years to life in state prison for sexually abusing two children.
Julie Werkheiser, 40, was sentenced Friday in Tioga County Court after a jury in November convicted her of felony predatory sexual assault against a child.
According to Waverly police, who investigated the case, Werkheiser abused two children who were her dance students between July 2006 and November 2007. Police said the children were between the ages of 6 and 8 at the time.
Police said Werkheiser’s domestic partner, Samantha Stone, of Waverly, also was accused of abusing a child under the age of 13 in Binghamton.
Stone was convicted in Broome County Court in 2013 of predatory sexual assault against a child and sentenced to 12 years to life in prison, but in November, a state appeals court ordered a new trial.
