    [John] Goodwin was accused of assaulting a male subject between May 2002 and October 2005. Police didn't release the age of the alleged victim. Police said the assaults took place at Goodwin Music Academy in Atkinson, where Goodwin teaches piano lesson.

    Union Leader: Atkinson piano teacher charged with sexually assaulting student, 11 (Feb 14 2014)

    Police Chief Al Brackett said the male victim was one of [John] Goodwin's students. The assault allegedly occurred between May 2002 and October 2005. Brackett said the victim was 11 at the time and came forward about three months ago ... Police investigated the alleged assault over the past three months and arrested Goodwin at his home this morning. After police showed up to make the arrest just before 8:30 a.m., Brackett said Goodwin became unresponsive and was transported by ambulance to Exeter Hospital for evaluation.

    According to Atkinson Police, John Goodwin, 74, of 23 Academy Avenue was arrested on a warrant around 8:25 a.m. and charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault. Goodwin was arrested after a three month investigation by the Atkinson Police Department and the Rockingham County Attorney’s Office into allegations that he sexually assaulted a male subject between May 2002 and October 2005. The sexual assault is alleged to have occurred at Goodwin’s business, Goodwin Music Academy in Atkinson, where Goodwin teaches piano lessons.

    John Goodwin, 74, of Atkinson, New Hampshire was arrested Friday morning on aggravated felonious sexual assault charges. Police tell FOX 25 Goodwin became unresponsive during his arrest and was transported to Exeter Hospital. Goodwin's arrest is the result of the three month investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a male between May 2002 and October 2005. Investigators say the alleged abuse happened at Goodwin's business, Goodwin Music Academy.

    Judge rules that statements of Atkinson piano teacher admissible at trial on sexual assault charges

    John Goodwin ... was arrested at his home last Feb. 14, weeks after the victim reported the alleged assaults to police. Judge N. William Delker rejected arguments by the defense that Atkinson police Chief Al Brackett was seeking to illicit incriminating statements from Goodwin when he asked him if he knew why police were at his home.

    The wife of an Atkinson piano teacher is being investigated for possibly tampering with her husband’s business records ... The records contain information about a student that John Goodwin, 75, is accused of molesting during piano lessons at his home sometime between May 2002 and October 2005. ... “The state suspected that the records had been altered by Jane Goodwin after they were returned to her to make it appear as if (the victim) did not begin taking piano lessons from the defendant until he was 13 years old.”

    jury Tuesday heard how a piano teacher allegedly began molesting a male student more than a decade ago, first by giving back rubs and massages during lessons ...     Jury to begin deliberating in sex assault trial of Atkinson piano teacher

    A jury will begin deliberating today in the trial of an Atkinson piano teacher who is accused of molesting a male student more than a decade ago during lessons at his home. Prosecutors contend that John Goodwin, 75, escalated physical contact with the youth from back rubs and massages to a series of assaults that spanned May 2002 to October 2005. “He remembers how scared he was and he remembers how confused he was,” Assistant County Attorney Kirsten Wilson said of the former student during closing arguments. “That’s what is etched in a kid’s mind when he is molested.”

    UPDATED: Atkinson piano teacher shoots self outside court awaiting verdict in sex assault trial

    An Atkinson piano teacher [John Goodwin] awaiting a verdict in his trial on sexual assault charges shot himself in the chest with a small caliber handgun outside the Rockingham County Superior Court Friday morning, the New Hampshire Union Leader has learned.

    Emergency personnel responded to the courthouse shortly after 11 a.m. for a report that a man shot himself. Court bailiffs and sheriff’s deputies rushed over to help the man as he lay on the ground in the parking lot before police and emergency medical technicians arrived.

    A witness told the New Hampshire Union Leader that he was sitting in his car and saw an older man outside walking toward some bushes. Moments later, he said, he heard a gunshot.

    Atkinson man dies after shooting self during trial

    An Atkinson piano teacher, on trial for sexual assault, died late Friday, hours after shooting himself outside Rockingham Superior Court. The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office announced about 7:30 p.m. that John Goodwin, 75, was dead — only hours after a mistrial was declared in the case.


    Meanwhile, apparently unaware that the defendant whose fate they were deliberating had already assumed room temperature:

    Jurors deliberated for seven hours before returning the courtroom at about 4:20 p.m. Friday, according to Rockingham County Attorney Patricia Conway. "They were not able to reach a unanimous verdict," she said. "We will reassess the situation in a few weeks."
