Former PHHS student testifies about “his friend” having sexual relations with teacher

A former student at Parsippany Hills High School testified Tuesday that his friend — then a 16-year-old male student — told him earlier this year about having sexual relations with a teacher [Jenna Leahey] in her classroom, according to nj.com. The statements — in which the witness described both his friend and the teacher touching the other’s genitals — came during a pre-trial hearing in Morris County Superior Court.

    ...

NJ.com, reported the former student said he learned of the alleged relationship between his friend and Leahey when he and the friend were playing video games in late January or early February. “He told me he was talking to a girl,” the former student testified. “He made me guess who it was. I said a sophomore, junior, senior? Then, I said, ‘Was it a teacher?’ and he got really quiet.” ... The former student said the alleged victim showed him text messages and “sort of nude” pictures that Leahey send him.

Parsippany coach, youths, detail teacher's contact with teen

Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Meg Rodriguez called Coach David Albano to testify to a meeting he had on June 7, 2013, with the accuser and his close friend, a now-18-year-old who also was a witness for the state Tuesday. Albano said the alleged victim had been called into the school’s administrative offices the previous day where he was questioned about rumors that he was intimate with Leahey. Albano said the teen told him he denied to administrators that he had any personal involvement with Leahey “and he was scared because he had lied.” Albano said the youth used the phrase of “talking with Ms. Leahey,” a euphemism known around school to mean being romantically involved or flirting with someone. The teen confided that he and Leahey had kissed in her car and in class and had exchanged sexually-graphic texts over their cell phones, Albano said. “I asked ‘Have you slept with Ms. Leahey?’ He said ‘Well no, not yet,'” Albano testified.

A Flanders resident, Leahey, now 33, gave police, including Prosecutor’s Office Detective Edward Mitreuter, a taped interview that was played Tuesday to the judge. In her interview, Leahey conceded that she was “stupid” and sent the teenager provocative photographs of herself and sexually-explicit messages but said the removed nature of the communications made her feel bold in a way she wasn’t when physically near the youth. She said that when she saw the youth in person, she tried to resist his aggressive efforts to be sexual with her. “I never physically touched the kid ever. He is just a kid,” she said in her 2013 interview. “I do feel responsible I didn’t draw that line immediately,” she said of exchanging texts with him. She also told police that the youth tried several times to kiss her and pawed at her breasts and buttocks and put his hand down her pants despite her protests.

Rodriguez also called the victim’s close friend in high school, who said the victim confided in him he was “talking” to Leahey and that it started when they became friendly playing an online game with each other. Leahey allegedly got drunk one night and sent the victim “dirty” messages, the friend said. He testified that the accuser started showing him messages he received from Leahey and “mostly sort of naked” pictures of the body of a woman he believed to be Leahey. The friend said he received some of the provocative pictures and disseminated them to a few friends. Under questioning by defense lawyer Stephanie Forbes, the friend acknowledged that he recently learned it’s a crime to disseminate the photos without the person’s consent but that he doesn’t expect to be charged.

A second friend of the accuser who was in high school with him said he didn’t believe it at first when the teenager confided his relationship with Leahey. But then he was shown text messages. The second friend said the accuser divulged the relationship after he teased him several times about hanging around Leahey’s classroom.

Kissing, Touching, Sexting: Former Morris County Teacher Admits Relationship With Teen

According to nj.com, Jenna Leahey, 33, of Morristown, admitted to police in a video during her interrogation that she sent photos and sexually explicit text messages to a 16-year-old male teen student at the school where she worked ... In the video, Leahey says the reason she touched the teen’s genitals is because he forced her hand there, the report said. That backs up the claim Leahey’s attorney, Stephanie Forbes, has been citing since her client’s indictment that the teacher was also sexually assaulted.

MORRISTOWN — A judge ruled on Tuesday that the 'explicit' text messages between a former Parsippany Hills High School teacher and a student will be admissible in court.
The attorney for Jenna Leahey, 33, a former English teacher and field hockey coach at the school, had argued that permitting the text-message exchanges to be seen would be "unduly prejudicial" in the sexual assault case.

    ...

The judge said he was ready to rule on all the motions before him and move the case along. The next scheduled trial date in a status conference on May 27. The judge said he hopes to set trial date for this fall.

    Jan 20, 2016:
A former teacher at Parsippany Hills High School on Wednesday rejected the prosecutor's two final plea offers in a case accusing her of having sexual contact with a male student in 2013.
Jenna Leahey, 33, a former English teacher and field hockey coach at the school, said she wants to go to trial on the charges.

Describing the plea offers that were extended but rejected, Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Meg Rodriguez said one offer would have required Leahey to plead guilty to a single charge of official misconduct. That would have required a mandatory five-year state prison sentence, with no chance for parole.

Ex-Parsippany teacher to face child endangerment charges

A judge denied a motion Tuesday to dismiss two charges of child endangerment against a former Parsippany Hills High School teacher.
Under the second offer, Leahey would have pleaded guilty only to a charge of child endangerment. That would also have involved a five-year prison sentence, but Leahey would have been eligible for an earlier parole. However, Leahey would also have been required to register as a sex offender under Megan's Law and to undergo parole supervision for the rest of her life.
NOTE: The former teacher’s trial is now scheduled to get under way on July 11.

    GUILTY
    April 10, 2017

MORRISTOWN - A former Parsippany Hills High School English teacher and field hockey coach - whose claims of being pressured by a 16-year-old student into a sexual relationship were contradicted by her graphic texts to him - was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for sexting the former student.

Defendant Jenna Leahey, now 35 of Boonton and formerly of Flanders, had avoided trial on a more serious charge of official misconduct by pleading guilty in January to endangering the welfare of a child by exchanging sexually-graphic texts with a male junior student in 2013.

The victim, now 20 and with a pending lawsuit against Leahey and the Parsippany school district, was in Superior Court Monday for the sentencing, accompanied by his mother and a small group of other friends and relatives. Leahey had admitted in January to sexting the then-student between February and June 2013.
