Parma substitute teacher accused in connection with bullying incident appears in court

Gregg Mellinger, 49, of North Ridgeville is charged with endangering children, a first-degree misdemeanor. He pleaded not guilty March 19. Mellinger is accused of witnessing the Feb. 28 bullying incident but not intervening to stop it, according to a police report.

    ...

The incident is said to have occurred during a Feb. 28 gym class at the school. It began when a 14-year-old boy repeatedly threw a volleyball at the 14-year-old victim's head from close range; a 13-year-old girl was also seen laughing and encouraging the bullying. The victim eventually fell to the floor, according to a police report. The victim, who appeared disoriented, staggered back to his feet. At that point, the girl walked over to the victim and kicked him in the groin, causing him to fall again, according to the report.

Police said the teacher dispersed a group of students who had gathered around the victim, but then walked over to another part of the gymnasium and resumed teaching while the victim remained facedown on the floor. At that point several other boys walked over to the victim, and a 14-year-old boy grabbed his feet and dragged him across the gym floor. A 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy then squatted over the victim and simulated obscene acts near his head.
