Prosecutor Ian Speed said in August last year it was detected that a computer had been used to access a website containing images of children of a sexual nature. Through the computer’s IP (Internet Protocol) address, the police managed to trace the user to an address in Birmingham. They went there with a search warrant on September 19, and were told that although Clay had been living there, he had moved to take up a teaching post at Stratford High School.​

So officers went there, arriving after pupils had gone home, and spoke to the head who confirmed Clay worked there. Clay, who was still at the school premises, was arrested and his home was searched, and his computer was seized and examined by police experts. They found 2,301 still indecent images of children, mainly boys, and 629 movies, as well as evidence of others which had been deleted. The images ranged across all five levels of seriousness, although more than half were classed as level one, showing children in indecent poses but with no sexual activity. But the others included more than 600 level two images of children engaging in sexual activity, 490 level four images of adults involved in penetrative sex acts with children, and 27 level five images showing acts of sadism or bestiality.​

When questioned, Clay said he had been viewing images of boys sporadically since he was 13 and downloading them from the age of 18, adding that he knew it was wrong and had smashed two previous computers to try to stop himself.​

Edward Clay, aged 27, was living in Alcester Road when he was arrested in September, but the disgraced teacher who had been downloading images of boys since he was 18, has escaped jail. He was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for two years at Warwick Crown Court ... He was also ordered to take part in an internet sex offender treatment programme, to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, and to pay £340 costs.​

When the police traced a computer which had been used to download indecent images of boys they were told the owner had moved – after getting a job as a teacher in Warwickshire. So officers went to Stratford High School where they arrested maths teacher Edward Clay, who pleaded guilty to 21 charges of possessing indecent images of children. But it was stressed at the crown court in Leamington that there was no suggestion Clay, who will never be allowed to teach again, had ever behaved improperly towards any child. Clay, 27, of Alcester Road, Stratford at the time of his arrest, was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for two years ... Sentencing Clay, Judge Marten Coates ordered him to register as a sex offender for ten years and imposed a sexual offences prevention order prohibiting him from deleting his internet history and requiring his computer to be available for inspection by the police.​

Parents of pupils at Stratford-upon-Avon School are “disgusted” they were not told a teacher was arrested on school premises over child porn charges. Edward Clay, a 27-year-old maths teacher, was arrested at the school in Alcester Road in September. He had 2,300 indecent images of children on his computer, as well as 629 indecent movies, and was given a suspended jail sentence at a recent court hearing. However, parents only found out about the incident this week after the Herald published a report of the case.​
