Some educators of color resist push for police-free schools

School districts nationwide are working to remove police officers from campuses, but some Black and Indigenous educational leaders are resisting the push prompted by the national reckoning over racial injustice and police brutality. Some say the system is hamstrung by a complicated mix of police response policies and a lack of support for alternative programs, which plays a role in students of color being disproportionately punished and arrested — the so-called school-to-prison pipeline. Some support individual officers skilled at working with students. Others say they need to learn more as activists urge change. Cities from Portland, Oregon, to Denver to ...

Fight for police-free schools has been years in the making

The group of protesters started out small, just a handful of students who told officials at school board meetings why they wanted police out of Madison, Wisconsin, schools. But officers remained at four high schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District until George Floyd's death by Minneapolis police ushered in a national reckoning over police brutality and racial injustice. That's when the school board president, who had ...

School resource officer position eliminated in Kittery

The town’s school district will not employ a school resource officer for the upcoming year following a hairline vote by the School Committee Tuesday night. A motion to approve the memorandum of agreement with the Police Department for School Resource Officer Jay Durgin’s services failed with a 3-3 tie, with Chair Julie Dow abstaining because Durgin is her brother. The vote came two weeks after a handful of community members wrote letters to the School Committee requesting the removal of police presence from Kittery schools. The news prompted polarizing discussions on town Facebook pages, as well as a competing petition. ...

Chicago schools vote to slash police officer budget in half

The Chicago Public School District will decrease spending for police officers in schools from $33 million to $15 million, according to a budget released Monday. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the reduction is partially due to officers not working in school during remote learning days. Police officers in schools have become the subject of debate following a national reconsideration of police programs following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May. Some say the system plays a role in students of color being disproportionately punished and arrested. However, following a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, a national effort was ...
