California: Oakland School District Defends Police Violence Against Protesters At Board Meeting

    The Oakland Police Department is hopelessly corrupt and has a long history of abusive behavior. In 2014 Oakland police violence resulted in months of riots and civil disturbances. Now it seems the Oakland PD is clubbing parents and teachers who object to school closings.

    The Oakland police have been under federal court supervision for 16 years (Allen v. City of Oakland), and they still aren't getting the message. In fact, the biggest gang in town is getting worse.

    The Oakland Unified School District defended itself against accusations that police officers behaved violently toward protesters at a Board of Education meeting on Wednesday evening, when six people were arrested, including one who was taken to a hospital and left using crutches. Video from the meeting showed police officers striking the protesting parents with batons as they approached a metal barricade. The protests were the latest in a series of demonstrations against school closures and the proliferation of charter schools.     District stands by police response to chaotic school board meeting

    Protesters arrested after rushing the metal barricades at an Oakland Unified school board meeting this week said Friday they plan to sue the district, alleging school police used excessive force and violated their rights to freedom of speech. Zach Norris and his partner Saru Jayaraman, who are part of the Oakland Is Not For Sale coaltion, said they also intend to sue the city of Oakland, whose officers showed up after the confrontation between protesters and school police ended.
