Alabama bill demands teachers take class on how not to have sex with students in state with highest rate of such trysts

Alabama teachers really need sex education. State lawmakers are considering a bill that would require all Alabama teachers to take training on how not to have sex with their students. In the month since the bill was first introduced, an Alabama school worker was either arrested or convicted for having sex with a student at least once a week. On Monday, Decatur City school teacher Carrie Witt was arrested for having sex with two students, police said. On March 17, former Pell City teacher Ashli Gilley pleaded guilty to having sex with two students, Al.com reported. That same day, an ...

Sex ed for Alabama teachers? Bill calls for training to not sleep with students

Alabama teachers are apparently the subject of too many schoolgirl fantasies. "Don't stand so close" to the children is the message behind legislation introduced to annually train teachers in how to avoid having sex with their students. The Educator-Student Interaction Training Act would require one hour of training per year on sexual or romantic contact, social media interactions, interactions outside the classroom, and the use of corporal punishment and physical restraints in classrooms. The bill cites increasing reports of inappropriate relations between teachers and students, in person and online. Two male assistant football coaches were arrested in March in a ...

Sex ed for Alabama teachers? Bill calls for training to not sleep with students

Two male assistant football coaches were arrested in March in a Limestone County high school for having sex with different students, while a female teacher from a different school was arrested for sleeping with at least two students, the Decatur Daily reported. In 2011, a female teacher was ...

Bill proposed for teachers to be trained on appropriate student-teacher interactions

It's a disturbing reality that seems all too common in society: teachers arrested and accused of having sexual relationships with students. Tuesday the Alabama Senate committee approved a bill requiring teachers to be advised on appropriate relations with students. "Every time you look at the TV, every time you look at any media, you see where a teacher and student have done things that are just not acceptable,” said Madison City Schools Superintendent, Dee Fowler. In the last week there have been three north Alabama teachers arrested for having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19. It's ...

Alabama May Soon Require Training For Teachers About How HAVING SEX WITH STUDENTS Is Bad

After an amazing string of teacher-student sex trysts throughout the state, a Senate committee in Alabama has approved a bill that would force taxpayer-funded teachers to undergo an hour of training each year to learn that having sex with underage students is not a good thing to do. The Alabama Senate Education Policy Committee passed Senate Bill 274, the Educator-Student Interaction Training Act, last week, reports The Birmingham News. The bill’s sponsor, Republican Cam Ward of Alabaster, said he is optimistic that a general state Senate vote will occur this week. If the bill becomes law, it would require mandatory ...

Sen. Ward kills "educator-student training act" bill after social media backlash

An Alabama lawmaker is throwing up his hands and giving up after his bill dealing with teachers having sex with students faces a huge backlash online. Senate Bill 274, known as the "Educator-Student Training Act," would have required the state to come up with a training course for all educators to go through. In that training course, they would learn what kinds of interactions with students are appropriate and what isn't. The bill got its first reading in the senate yesterday, and once political reporters, like our own Michael Doudna, picked up on it, the social media firestorm started. Teachers ...

Educators face 20-year sentences for sex with students

Court records show addition details of the cases of three north Alabama educators arrested over the past two weeks on allegations of having sexual relationships with their students. Trey Alton Stinson, 24, of Harvest; 23-year-old Devin Rumal Robinson of Madison and 42-year-old Carrie Cabri Witt of Decatur are all charged as school employees engaging in a sex act of deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19. The charge, a Class B felony, is punishable by two to 20 years in prison and registration as a sex offender. Witt, a teacher at Decatur High School, faces twice ...

Killed Alabama Proposal Would Have Taught Teachers Not to Have Sex With Students

Senate Bill 274 would’ve been a real thorn in the side to Alabama teachers who want to keep having sex with the kids in their social studies classes. The bill, introduced by Republican State Sen. Robert (Cam) Ward on Tuesday, would’ve created mandatory classes for teachers to discuss how not to have sex with the kids they teach. “The overwhelming majority of educators in the public schools of the state are dedicated professionals who comport themselves accordingly,” the bill states. “However…” Here we go. “An increasing number of incidents have been reported in recent years where educators have had inappropriate ...

Alabama teachers may soon receive training on not having sex with students

If the bill becomes law, it would require mandatory annual sessions for all public school teachers on avoiding sex with students and on appropriate social media interaction. "The bill would require the state superintendent, the School Superintendents of Alabama and the Alabama Education Association to develop the training program". Maybe they're talking overzealous coaches or those trying to step in to financially help broken homes? Another educator tweeted: "The Educator-Student Interaction Training Act is a waste of the government's time @SenCamWard". That's why the bill won't move forward after public outcry Tuesday night. Committee Chairman Dick Brewbaker, a former teacher, ...

Senator drops bill that would have educated teachers on appropriate contact

State Sen. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster, won't take further action on a bill that would have required teachers to undergo training about appropriate contact with students. Ward announced on his Twitter page Tuesday night that he would not proceed with Senate Bill 247, also known as the Educator-Student Training Act. His announcement came after he received negative comments from teachers on his Twitter page, though Ward's bill also had a few supporters. “I won't move bill any further,” Ward tweeted. “Thought I was helping educators who came to me. Won't do any further. My apologies.” He later clarified he was apologizing ...

What must be done to prevent teacher-student sex scandals?

What are we to make of the shockingly regular mug shots of Alabama teachers charged with sexual relationships with students? What can be done about this problem? It is tempting to believe the problem is Alabama schools hiring pedophiles and child predators. But, based on news stories, that possibility would not explain the majority of these reports. Although there have been school cases involving apparent pedophiles whose victims were children, most of these reports involve teenage victims, which means the perpetrators are unlikely to be pedophiles. A pedophile is an adult with a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to pre-pubescent ...
