Former Toronto teacher charged in child porn investigation

Police say a former Toronto elementary school teacher has been charged in connection with a child pornography investigation.

According to investigators, on Nov. 6 at around 11:30 a.m. police were called to the Employment and Social Services Centre at Lawrence Square.

Upon arrival, police say officers discovered a man viewing images of child pornography on a public computer.

After executing a search warrant at a residence in North York on Dec. 16, police say Stephen Joseph Schater, 55, was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography.

Investigators say that the accused was an elementary school teacher for the Eiz Chaim schools between 1986 and 2004, was the office administrator for the United Synagogue Day School between 2005 and 2009 and worked as a private tutor from 2009 to 2011. According to police, after reviewing seized evidence, investigators are concerned that the suspect may have had inappropriate contact with students.

Toronto ex-day school teacher charged with having child porn

A former Jewish day school teacher, administrator and private tutor in Toronto has been charged with possessing child pornography. Stephen Joseph Schacter, 55, was allegedly seen viewing child porn on a public computer at a social services center and was arrested Wednesday, The Star reported.

According to police, Schacter worked as an elementary teacher for the Eitz Chaim group of Orthodox day schools in Toronto from 1986 to 2004, an office administrator at Toronto’s United Synagogue Day School from 2005 to 2009 and a private tutor from 2008 to 2011. United Synagogue, now called Robbins Hebrew Academy, is affiliated with the Conservative movement.

Police said they are concerned Schacter had inappropriate contact with students at those institutions. According to Global News, he has been charged with one count of possession of child pornography. He appeared in court on Wednesday and will have his next court hearing in January.

Elias Levy, the executive director of Eitz Chaim, couldn’t be reached Friday, but Claire Sumerlus, the head of Robbins Hebrew Academy — formerly United Synagogue Day School — said parents of the 360 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 8 and student alumni have been notified of the investigation.

“We’re still conducting an internal review just to determine the facts,” she said. “We want to ensure parents the screening process for potential employees is extremely stringent.”

She said Schacter worked at two now-defunct campuses — the Richmond Hill campus from 2005 to 2006 as a supply teacher, and the Bayview campus from 2006 to 2009, in the office and as a supply teacher when needed.

“He left the school in 2009 and we’re still conducting a review as to understand the circumstances around his departure,” she said. “It’s always disheartening to hear that anyone’s been charged with child pornography.”

Police provide update on case of ex-teacher charged with possessing child porn

A former North York elementary school teacher is facing several charges after police say three former students came forward with allegations of sexual abuse. An investigation was launched in December 2015 after investigators say the man was allegedly found viewing images of child pornography on a public computer at the Employment and Social Service Centre at Lawrence Square. After executing a search warrant at the suspect’s home, police allege that images of child pornography were found in his possession and charges were laid.

Upon further investigation, police say it came to light that the man had been a teacher and an office administrator at various Toronto private schools over the last 30 years. Investigators say there is some indication that staff at at least one of the schools where he was employed had been aware of allegations that he was sexually inappropriate with some of his students.

Investigators say the suspect, identified as 55-year-old Stephen Joseph Schacter, had worked as a primary school teacher at the Eitz Chaim schools between 1986 and 2004, an office administrator at the United Synagogue Day School between 2004 and 2006 and also worked as a teaching assistance for grades 1 and 2 students at Pleasant Avenue Public School in 2004.

He also worked as a private tutor from 2009 to 2011, police say.

According to investigators, media coverage of the case prompted three complainants to come forward with allegations of sexual abuse stemming from incidents that allegedly took place in the 1980s and 1990s.

A former Toronto elementary school teacher is facing additional charges after three people came forward to report alleged inappropriate behaviour.

Toronto police said Monday that three victims contacted investigators after the teacher was charged with possession of child pornography late last year.

The victims told police that the teacher had been sexually inappropriate with them in the 1980s and 1990s. At the time, they were in elementary school, police said.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, 55-year-old Stephen Joseph Schacter has been charged with two counts of sexual assault. He has also been charged with sexual interference, sexual exploitation and gross indecency.

Stephen Joseph Schacter, 55, was initially arrested on Dec. 16, 2015 after police executed a search warrant at his home in North York. Stephen Jospeh Schacter, 55, a former Toronto elementary school teacher and private tutor, was arrested on Dec. 16. He is facing one count of possession of child pornography.

“Evidence was uncovered by police indicating that there had, in the past, been allegations that Stephen Schacter had been sexually inappropriate with persons under the age of 18 years old, including students,” Det. Const. Joel Manherz with the Toronto police Sex Crimes Unit told the media on Monday.

Police wouldn’t comment on if Schacter’s alleged victims were male, female or both. But they did say the victims were in the primary grades at the time and are now in their 30s and 40s.

Former teacher faces more child porn charges: Toronto Police

Police laid sex charges against a former Toronto teacher already facing accusations of possessing child pornography. Stephen Joseph Schacter, 55, was an elementary school teacher for Eitz Chaim schools, between 1986 and 2004, and an office administrator at the United Synagogue Day School, between 2005 and 2009. In November, 2015 police were called after a man allegedly viewed child pornography on a public computer at the Employment and Social Services Centre at Lawrence Square. In December, police executed a search warrant at a North York home and charged Schacter with possession of child pornography.

On Monday, police announced that three complainants came forward and last week Schacter was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault, gross indecency and sexual interference and exploitation.

“(Schacter) had access to these children because of his status in the community,” said Det. Const. Joel Manherz, who added the allegations centre around assaults on children in primary grades in the 1980s and 1990s.

He wouldn’t reveal the sex of the alleged victims.

”

“There are some indications reports may have been made to the schools, but not by these three (complainants) identified,” said Manherz, adding schools have an obligation to contact police in such cases. No one at Eitz Chaim could be reached for comment.
