Child sex abuse inquiry: Former SA deputy premier Don Hopgood accused of writing reference for paedophile teacher

    3 Nov 2015

A FORMER South Australian deputy premier has been accused of writing a reference for a teacher he knew had inappropriately touched a student on a school camp. The royal commission into child sexual abuse sitting in Brisbane today heard former state education minister and deputy premier Dr Don Hopgood has been called to give evidence over allegations he gave a reference to music teacher Gregor Robert Knight.

The commission heard Dr Hopgood had rescinded Knight’s dismissal from an Adelaide school in 1978 for “disgraceful and improper conduct”, despite being aware of proven allegations that he rubbed and touched a student inappropriately at a school camp in 1977.

He instead accepted Knight’s resignation and wrote him a reference, the commission was told. Knight went on to sexually abuse students in Brisbane and Darwin.
