She originally met the mother of the high school student at Smith Elementary School, where they both worked. Because the two were friends, the teacher allowed Gricar to move into her home to help her 18-year-old daughter with school. Gricar befriended a teacher's aide who also worked there. The teacher's aide had a 17-year-old daughter who was a homebound student in Spring ISD. Gricar moved in with the mother and daughter for a while to help the daughter with her education. The teen’s mom began to suspect that something was going on between the two. The mother said one day she arrived home to find the two of them locked in the teen’s bedroom. The daughter admitted to her mother that she and “Katie” kissed, investigators said. She also told her mother that she wanted to move out of their home and move in with Gricar.
