    Teachers are not mobsters

Last Tuesday, eight Atlanta Public Schools employees were sentenced to prison in one of the largest school cheating scandals in U.S. history. But you wouldn’t know they were cheaters based on how they were treated in court. The educators were convicted of racketeering — a felony typically reserved for mob bosses, drug kingpins and terrorists. The teachers are the latest victims of overcriminalization. They were charged under a law that had nothing to do with their actions. APS teacher re-hired after cheating scandal

You know the story well. Eleven educators arrested, tried and convicted on racketeering charges stemming from an elaborate plot to help teachers meet the demands of the no child left behind act. To do so, they changed student's answers on state-administered standardized tests. Now, CBS46 has discovered that one of the teachers involved in that scandal is back in the classroom. This time with more violations on her record. Her name is Idalina Couto. In 2012, Atlanta Public Schools fired her, after the GBI said she admitted to telling students to re-read questions with wrong answers or rewording questions students ...

Atlanta Educators Convicted in Cheating Scandal Prepare for Prison

Two former Atlanta Public Schools educators, convicted in the district's test cheating scandal in 2015, will now be heading to prison after exhausting the appeals of their 2015 convictions. They will be the first to begin serving their prison sentences, out of the 11 teachers and administrators convicted of a conspiracy to boost student scores on state standardized tests. The latest turn in this long-running case comes after the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this week declined to hear an appeal filed by Tamara Cotman and Angela Williamson. Cotman was a regional administrator and Williamson taught 4th grade at Dobbs Elementary ...

Transcript This is a rush transcript. Copy may not be in its final form. AMY GOODMAN: This is Democracy Now!, democracynow.org, The War and Peace Report. I’m Amy Goodman, with Juan González. JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Well, we turn now to the fight for public education, as the teachers’ strike in Denver heads into its third day. District and union negotiators worked late into the night Tuesday on a potential agreement, including a base salary of $45,800 a year for educators. That would be a $2,500 boost from their expected pay for 2019-’20 school year. But the Denver Classroom Teachers Association is ...

Former Teacher Blames Education Policymakers For Atlanta Cheating Scandal

In 2015, a verdict was delivered on the cheating scandal in Atlanta Public Schools. A 2011 Georgia state report found unethical behavior in the school system, including teachers and principals changing wrong answers on standardized tests. Two years later, a grand jury indicted the Atlanta school superintendent and 34 other educators. Some agreed to lesser charges; 12 eventually went to trial, and all but one of them were found guilty of racketeering in 2015 — a felony charge often used to prosecute the mafia. Shani Robinson was one of those found guilty, but has continued to maintain her innocence. In ...
