Youth Organizers Protest Cops in Classrooms

Over the weekend a protest to defund the Albuquerque Public Schools Police Department led by Fight For Our Lives, a local youth-led organization that campaigns for school safety and racial justice, met at the APS Headquarters and marched through Uptown. Several other local organizations including The Red Nation and Pueblo Action Alliance supported the protest and spoke on the issue of police in public schools. Of the estimated 200 protestors present, many were students or parents of students. The two-hour protest was peaceful and involved no direct contact with law enforcement, though there were many police present, both watching the ...

    The Value of School Police

A woman was raped during a daytime home invasion. The standard protocol was followed: police report, In Vitro kit, follow-up by detectives. The following day this information was disseminated at roll call in the district. On the second day one of the school teams had a lead. The third day a student was brought into the detective division where a lineup was held. Without hesitation the victim picked the student as the individual who raped her. He was charged with burglary and rape. One very cold winter day, the school team was patrolling the grounds before school started. They observed ...

‘A disjointed system’: Policing policies fuel criminalization of youth

The history of police in America is a story of repeated promises to change from its gatekeepers, yet people of color, adolescents and other vulnerable populations say they continuously bear the brunt of its shortcomings. Youth in America are criminalized every day, with racial and socioeconomic disparities further increasing their likelihood of being policed, arrested or killed by law enforcement. Despite overall declines in arrests and incarceration, children of color are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system every step of the way. In 2018, Black youth were arrested more than twice as often as white youth. “Hispanic/Latino youth are placed ...

Amid protests, Chicago Board of Education votes to keep school police, but also moves to create phase-out plan

The Chicago Board of Education will enter into another yearlong contract with the Chicago Police Department, this time not to exceed $12.1 million. In the meantime, the board gave Chicago Public Schools seven months to come up with a comprehensive plan to help schools develop alternative school safety strategies. As students continued to protest the use of school police outside CPS’s Loop headquarters Wednesday, the board voted 4-2 to approve the contract that will pay for officers to be stationed in more than 50 high schools when they reopen. Elizabeth Todd-Breland and Amy Rome voted no, while Board President Miguel ...

Waukegan Board of Education continues to wrestle with future of school resource officers

As the Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 Board of Education took a deeper dive into whether to continue employing members of the Waukegan Police Department as school resource officers, few members revealed their positions. The board listened to a variety of opinions from Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles, district administrators and community members in a virtual workshop meeting Tuesday, promising to survey parents, staff and students before voting on a final decision. A group of community members, including Waukegan High School graduates from the last six years, initiated a petition drive in July which now has more than 500 ...

'Super-predator' legacy: How children end up in the adult justice system

Tens of thousands of children, mostly teens, are prosecuted as adults every year, and some serve out their sentences in prisons where most of the inmates are adults. Nationally, no single organization tracks the number of young people sentenced as adults because each state uses an array of their own laws and variables to decide which kids should be treated as adults. “Geography is just one component of where they live that can dictate their life chances,” said Jennifer Peck, associate professor at the University of Central Florida. Tristan was 16 when he left his Phoenix home for a night ...

Florida family sues after video surfaces of police handcuffing 8-year-old at school

A Florida family is suing after a video surfaced showing the arrest of an 8-year-old boy at an elementary school. Police said the child, whom the family says has special needs, was accused of punching a teacher in a 2018 incident in Key West, Florida. The video began circulating on social media this week. Body camera video shows the child crying as he was handcuffed. Crump, who is representing the boy’s family, provided the video, which shows Key West police officers trying to arrest the 64-pound, 3.5-foot-tall boy only to realize the handcuffs were too big for him. According to ...

Activists call to cut policing in Orange schools, echoing national debate

Amid a national debate about police brutality, some Orange County activists want the county’s public schools to cut back on spending for school police officers and spend the money instead on counseling and mental health services for students. The Orange school district’s proposed budget, tentatively adopted in July and set for a final vote Tuesday, includes a $1.1 million hike for police services, much of that earmarked for school resource officers, often called SROs. The new money would pay for officers for three new campuses and cover increased expenses, but it would also allow the district to put a second ...
