Short-sighted and dangerous to remove SRO officers

To school district superintendents, school boards, and school administrators who are considering recent requests to scrutinize and ultimately eliminate school resource officers, please remember: On August 24, 2006, Christopher Williams entered Essex Elementary School, began shooting and killed a teacher and injured another as he searched for his girlfriend, another teacher. In 2018, Jack Sawyer was arrested and accused of plotting a mass shooting at his former high school in Fair Haven. Then there are the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, CT, Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, and the Columbine High School massacre. The ...

Police in Bend-La Pine Schools have complicated presence

Melissa Barnes Dholakia, then 16, clashed with school administration at her Oakland, California, high school over feelings that resource officers racially profiled a group of Black students. Now, as a Bend-La Pine School Board member, she is discussing the role of school resource officers alongside Bend city officials, local law enforcement groups and a Bend nonprofit comprised mainly of Black fathers. Barnes Dholakia wants to ensure that the police in schools don’t create an unsafe or intimidating environment for students of color. “We need to make sure it’s not just our predominant Caucasian population that feels safe in schools, but ...

CT districts question whether to remove police from schools

Youths have led many of the protests and demonstrations against police violence in the past six weeks, and the current social climate has some questioning the role of police officers, particularly in schools. About 24 percent of schools in the state employ school resource officers — sworn members of the local police department who can have a range of duties in schools, including security, counseling and teaching. These positions have been praised for building relationships between the community and police, and acting as positive forces in the lives of students. But arrests of children, particularly special education students or students ...

Phoenix Geimer: There’s little evidence police in schools can deter mass shootings

I am profoundly disappointed in the editorial board’s choice to run a canned op-ed from the Heritage Foundation in the space normally occupied by your “Our Say” editorial (”Calls to pull armed officers from schools are off-target, The Capital, July 18). Considering that The Heritage Foundation still prominently denies the existence and effects of climate change, all of their other claims deserve increased scrutiny. True to form, in combining one anecdote with one older study, Jonathan Butcher presents the false appearance of rigor and certainty in his stance that armed police, or school resource officers, in schools are a proven ...

Fight for police-free schools has been years in the making

The group of protesters started out small, just a handful of students who told officials at school board meetings why they wanted police out of Madison, Wisconsin, schools. Over four years, their numbers grew but not their results. So they took to yelling from the audience and making emotional pleas about how police make students, especially those of color, feel unsafe. But officers remained at four high schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District until George Floyd's death by Minneapolis police ushered in a national reckoning over police brutality and racial injustice. That's when the school board president, who had ...

Arrest Rates For Latinx Students Decline, But SD Unified Students Still Call For Defunding Police

At San Diego Unified, the disparity in arrest rates between Latinx and white students has closed, thanks in part to restorative justice practices. Still, students say police have no place on their campuses. Speaker 1: 00:00 This is KPBS midday edition. I'm Maureen Cavenaugh with Mark Sauer, as activists nationwide call for the defunding of police departments. The same reckoning is occurring in schools at San Diego. Unified students say police have no place on their campuses, but the districts police department has made some progress. In recent years, KPBS education reporter Joe Hong spoke to students and experts about ...

Some educators of colour resist push for police-free schools

School districts nationwide are working to remove police officers from campuses, but some Black and Indigenous educational leaders are resisting the push prompted by the national reckoning over racial injustice and police brutality. Some say the system is hamstrung by a complicated mix of police response policies and a lack of support for alternative programs, which plays a role in students of colour being disproportionately punished and arrested — the so-called school-to-prison pipeline. Some support individual officers skilled at working with students. Others say they need to learn more as activists urge change. Cities from Portland, Oregon, to Denver to ...

Protesters from multiple organizations decry police in schools, racism in protest near station

Protesters from a range of backgrounds - from idealistic students to disenfranchised communists – gathered near the police station Saturday afternoon, demanding officers be pulled out of schools and decrying systemic racism. Holding signs with a variety of causes – from Black Lives Matter to defunding police to ending capitalism – a group of about 75 people took turns speaking at a microphone in the hot summer sun in Lincoln Square. As many passing motorists honked their horns, several speakers alluded to media stories about young children being arrested by resource officers in other cities, including Rumianna Islam, a Worcester ...

Prosecution of school brawl draws focus of police reform commission

A judge has thrown out a felony riot charge against a 15-year-old black high school student who punched another student in response to a racial slur, the student’s public defender told the New Hampshire Union Leader last week. Attorney Julian Jefferson spoke as details of the case, usually shrouded in the secrecy of juvenile court, have been disclosed and debated in paperwork filed with a state commission considering police reforms. On one side are Manchester police, who said the punch started a dangerous brawl that involved more than nine students and was witnessed by more than 200 others in a ...
