11 Alive: Bartow County School Board member arrested (Dec 31 2012)

On Friday, December 28, Angela Cornett was arrested and charged with Reckless Conduct after an incident in the Walmart parking lot in Cartersville. A Bartow County Sheriff's incident report says a 17 year old 12th grader from Adairsville High School was holding a parking space, for her brother's girlfriend, when Cornett told her to move. She didn't and that's when Cornett is alleged to have accelerated into the parking space with enough force to physically move the alleged victim. Police noted the alleged victim had 'road grime' along her pant leg consistent with the tire size on Cornett's white Lexus SUV. However, she was not visibly hurt.

Cartersville Patch: Updated: Walmart Parking Lot Video of School Board Member Released (Jan 2 2013)

Authorities released the Walmart surveillance video they say shows Cornett "lurch forward" in her SUV and strike a pedestrian in a parking space at Walmart and photographs a deputy captured as evidence. "From watching the video, it's obvious the pedestrian was standing there when the vehicle lurched forward and has to move out of the way very quickly," Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said. "You can't tell close how she was struck or exactly how hard she was struck, but you can see that she was standing there when the vehicle lurched forward and had to move out of the way quickly. "[Cornett] stated the [alleged] victim leaned into her vehicle and that's how she got marks on her pants. From watching the evidence of the video, I do not buy [her] argument." Rogers said Cornett, who was charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct, could face additional charges.

Deputies in an Atlanta suburb say Angela Cornett — a member of a local school board, no less — was so intent on getting a spot, she apparently struck a 17-year-old girl with her SUV in a dispute over a space at a Wal-Mart. The teen stood in the space to save it for a friend who had just given birth, but when Cornett saw the spot she demanded the girl get out of the way. When the girl refused, Cornett allegedly struck her with her vehicle.

GA Daily News: Bartow County school board member Angela Cornett accused of running SUV into teen (Jan 3 2013)

Authorities say that driver was Bartow County school board member Angela Cornett and the person trying to hold the space was a 17-year-old Adairsville High School student. Officials said that words were exchanged between the two before the incident. "The deputy on the scene actually went and watched the video before he made any charges against Miss Cornett and from watching the video, it's obvious that the pedestrian was standing there when the vehicle lurched forward and has to move out of the way very quickly. You can't tell close-up how she was struck or exactly how hard she was struck, but you can see she was standing there when the vehicle lurched forward," said Bartow County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jonathan Rogers. Investigators say the teen's pants had a black mark on them allegedly from the tires of the board member's Lexus. That and the surveillance video prompted authorities to charge Cornett with reckless conduct.
