KTLA: After YouTube Video, 2nd Accuser Files Legal Claim Over Alleged Sex Abuse (Jan 23 2014)

An attorney for an 18-year-old woman, identified only as Brianna, held a news conference Thursday in South Pasadena where he said his client was abused as a 14-year-old student at Val Verde Unified School District.

    ...

Shortly after Carrillo posted the video, she was contacted by Brianna, who said she too had a relationship with Cardosa. “She began to bribe me with things like movie tickets, candy bars and a trip to lunch and all kinds of stuff,” Brianna wrote in a message that Carrillo shared with KTLA. “Now I realize that, after everything, she was obsessed with me. Maybe in love.” Brianna wrote that she recognized Cardosa’s voice from Carrillo’s YouTube video. “I stopped talking to her about my sophomore year because I just completely felt uncomfortable by her,” Brianna wrote. “I don’t want money or anything, but to just simply tell you that there are other girls out there.”

ABC Local KABC: Victim files sex abuse charges against IE school districts after YouTube video (Jan 22 2014)

That video prompted a second woman to come forward alleging that she was also abused by Cardosa, when the suspect worked as a vice principal in Perris. "When my client saw Jamie on TV, it just triggered flashbacks as to her own abuse," said attorney Luis Carrillo. He says his client, identified only as Brianna, was abused in much the same way that Jamie alleged in her now-viral YouTube video. "She befriended her, she pretended to be a mentor, a guide, a guardian, and then she was really coming on to her and tried to seduce her. In her mother's words, she was trying to seduce her daughter," said Carrillo.

    ...

On Wednesday, Carrillo filed two lawsuits; one was filed against Val Verde Unified School District, which is where he says his client was abused, and another lawsuit was filed against Riverside Unified School District. "Both school districts were negligent and fell asleep, they weren't protecting the kids," said Carrillo.

Los Angeles Times: Alhambra vice principal, accused of sex abuse, quits; inquiry begins (Jan 23 2014)

Andrea Cardosa, 40, resigned from her post at Alhambra High School last Friday, a few hours after the video went live and someone forwarded it to school administrators. Jamie Carillo, 28, says Cardosa began sexually abusing her when she was an eighth-grader at a Riverside middle school in the late 1990s. At the time, Cardosa was a teacher there. Carillo said she posted the video on YouTube because she thought it was the only way to get justice. On Tuesday, a second woman came forward with allegations against Cardosa, according to Riverside police. "We believe the video is serious enough to investigate. We have detectives working on this," Riverside police spokesman Val Graham said.

    ...

Before arriving at Alhambra, Cardosa worked for three other school districts, teaching, serving as vice principal and coaching girls' sports. Each time she was hired, Cardosa passed all necessary background checks, according to officials at the Riverside Unified School District, Val Verde Unified School District and Coalinga-Huron Joint Unified School District. Carillo's attorney, David Ring, said Riverside police and school officials interviewed Carrillo and Cardosa in 1999 but no charges were filed. Riverside police declined to comment on whether there was an investigation, and school officials said they were not aware of prior accusations against Cardosa.

ABC Local KABC: 2nd woman speaks out, accuses former teacher of sexual abuse (Jan 23 2014)

Brianna, 18, is eight months pregnant, and as she is about to become a mother, she says she found the courage to come forward to help other potential victims. "The district needs to start doing their job because they're supposed to protect their students, not physically harm them and mentally harm them," said Brianna. Brianna said that in 2010, when she was 14, she was sexually molested by Andrea Cardosa, who was then her teacher in the Val Verde Unified School District in Perris. She said Cardosa was controlling. "By convincing my mother that she would do great in my life, she turned my mind against thinking that all I needed was her," said Brianna. "There was lots of manipulation within the time."

    ...

Brianna's attorney, Luis Carrillo, filed lawsuits against the two school districts on Wednesday. "[The Riverside] district ignored it, gave a positive recommendation to Ms. Cardosa and then she got a new job at Val Verde Unified School District, where she committed other acts," said Carrillo.

Huffington Post: Andrea Cardosa, Former Teacher, Accused Of Molestation By 2nd Woman (Jan 23 2014)

At a press conference on Thursday, the second woman, Brianna, told reporters that she watched the YouTube video on Saturday, and "it was like a trigger, like a flashback." Brianna, who is now 18, says Cardosa befriended her mother while Brianna was a student at Tomas Rivera Middle School in Perris in 2010. She then "groomed" Brianna by giving her movie tickets, candy bars and lunch trips and calling her special, then made several sexual advances, inappropriately touching her and abusing her, according to a copy of the claim filed against Val Verde Unified. Brianna's lawyer Luis Carrillo said school officials failed to heed signs of an improper relationship between Cardosa and his client.

She said that she would kill herself if I ever left, and I believed her."

The second student, Brianna, says that her sex-abuse grooming process was similar to Carrillo's, from the manipulation and alienation of family members to the special treatment. In addition to Cardosa's charges of aggravated sexual assault on a child under the age of 14, she faces five counts of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14, and six counts of lewd acts on a child 14 or 15 years of age while the defendant is at least 10 years older than the victim.
