Sheriff's Det. Sgt. Brooks Bigwarfe said the case came to the attention of Potsdam police after the girl's parents complained about the relationship. When deputies found [Thomas] McGowan, Bigwarfe said, he and the girl -- a former student of his -- were together in a car, although nothing sexual was taking place ... UPDATED: Potsdam school teacher jailed on sexual abuse charge

It is alleged Mr. [Thomas] McGowan had sexual contact with a 14-year-old female Sept. 10 at a location in the town of Potsdam. The school’s release did not indicate if the alleged victim was a student - past or present - in Mr McGowan’s classroom. The teenager, in her statement to police, said the Sept. 10 incident took place after school in the back seat of Mr. McGowan’s truck in a field off the May Road. She also indicated in her statement it was not the only time she had sexual contact with Mr. McGowan. “Over the past month on several occasions I and Mr. McGowan sent several nude photos to each other via Snapchat from each other’s cell phones,” the teenager said in her statement.

Sheriff’s detectives were alerted of the incident late Thursday when Det. Arthur R. Shattuck, in a report, stated that he received a call from Potsdam Police Chief Kevin M. Bates who said Mr. McGowan had been a suspect in a rape case and that Mr. McGowan had been at the Potsdam Walmart, purchasing ammunition and may be suicidal. While heading to Mr. McGowan’s home, at about 8:45 p.m., Mr. Shattuck said he and Potsdam Police Sgt. Michael P. Ames saw a vehicle that resembled Mr. McGowan’s in the parking lot of Orlando Chiropractic on Route 56 in the town of Potsdam. “We approached the vehicle and saw a white male enter the driver’s seat,” Mr. Shattuck said in the report. “I saw that there were large back tubes attached to the vehicles exhaust pipes and extended over the bed of the truck into the rear window of the vehicle and the vehicle was still running.” Mr. McGowan was taken into custody without incident at that time telling police “that this will kill his wife,” Mr. Shattuck said in his statement.​
