City hires lawyer for officer who threw teacher to ground

Austin officials say state law requires they provide a legal defense to Richter in such cases. Richter arrested elementary school teacher Breaion King after she was stopped for speeding in June 2015. A camera in the patrol car recorded the arrest.

Judges tosses out Austin suit over violent arrest — for now

In a story Oct. 14 about a black woman’s lawsuit against a white Austin police officer who threw her to the ground during a traffic stop, The Associated Press erroneously reported that a federal judge had dismissed the case. The judge dismissed the portion of Breaion King’s lawsuit against the city of Austin but left intact the portion against the officer, Bryan Richter. A corrected version of the story is below: Judge dismisses part of Austin lawsuit over violent arrest A federal judge has dismissed part of a lawsuit filed by a black woman who sued Texas’ capital city after ...

Judges Tosses Out Austin Suit Over Violent Arrest

A federal judge has dismissed — at least for now — a lawsuit filed by a black woman who sued Texas’ capital city after being thrown to the ground by a white police officer during a traffic stop last year. U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks in Austin said in an order filed Friday that Breaion King’s suit was “without specific factual allegations.” But he gave King the option to refile, and her attorney, Erica Grigg, said she plans to do so as soon as possible. King, an elementary school teacher, sued the city of Austin in August, seeking damages that ...

Austin settles with Breaion King for $425K

The Austin City Council unanimously approved $425,000 to settle with a woman who was violently arrested by Austin police officers in 2015. Breaion King's arrest was captured on dash camera, and showed her being slammed to the ground. King filed several lawsuits against the city and Officer Brian Richter. In October 2016, a U.S. district judge dismissed the lawsuit against the city, but King refiled it. King's attorney issued a statement stating King is "grateful to be able to put her legal battle behind her, but she knows she still has work to do." She still wants "racist mentality" to ...

Former Austin officer to never work in local law enforcement again after controversial 2015 arrest

Former Austin police officer Bryan Richter -- whose controversial arrest of an elementary teacher sparked outrage and led to department reforms -- will never work in local law enforcement again as part of an agreement with prosecutors. The agreement will close an ongoing case against Richter stemming from his actions during the arrest of a man outside Barton Creek Square Mall in 2017, in which police said he placed his foot on the man's head -- which is in violation of department policy. Richter was fired and prosecutors have been reviewing that case for possible charges against him. In exchange ...

Texas Cops Arrest About 45,000 Drivers a Year for Minor Traffic Offenses

The practice of arresting drivers for minor traffic violations in Texas first received wide national attention as a result of the 2001 Supreme Court decision in Array, which upheld the handcuffing, booking, and jailing of a woman who violated a state law requiring drivers and front-seat passengers to wear seat belts. In 2016 such rough treatment of motorists became even more controversial when a 28-year-old woman named Sandra Bland, who was arrested after a state trooper stopped her for failing to signal a lane change, died of an apparent suicide in the Waller County jail. A new report from the ...
