Scott Paul Beierle killed two people and injured five others when he opened fire on a yoga studio in Tallahassee, Florida, on Friday evening, police said. Six people suffered gunshot wounds and one was pistol whipped in the attack at Hot Yoga Tallahassee. Beierle killed himself in the incident, according to Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo. The gunman's LinkedIn profile said he had been a "job seeker" since 2013. The account said that he graduated from State University of New York at Binghamton with a degree in political science and government in 2002 and that he obtained master degrees in ...

He served as an English teacher between 2005 and 2007. Beierle then became a deputy director of supply and logistics for the U.S. Army, holding the position between 2008 and 2010.

He was arrested in 2012 and 2016 after being accused of grabbing womens' buttocks, according to WCTV, which cited court records. In the first incident, a woman said Beierle groped her at a dining hall at FSU. Another woman also said that Beierle had inappropriately touched her multiple times in the prior month. In the 2016 incident, he reportedly requested to rub sunscreen on a woman's buttocks. She denied the request. Beierle then groped her and left. Charges were later dropped in both cases.

The gunman was also arrested for trespassing at a FSU dining hall in 2014, when he had a campus-wide trespass warning against him.

The victims of the shooting were 61-year-old Nancy Van Vessem, and 21-year-old Maura Binkley. Binkley was a FSU student. Van Vessem was a faculty member of the university's medical school. Van Vessem was an internal medicine doctor who was the chief medical director for Florida's Capital Helath Plan, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Tallahassee police said law enforcement in the past had responded to calls involving Beierle harassing women. Beierle was charged with battery in 2016 after he slapped and grabbed a woman’s buttocks at an apartment complex pool. Records show that the charges were eventually dismissed after Beierle followed the conditions of a deferred prosecution agreement.

He was also charged with battery in 2012 for grabbing women’s buttocks in a university campus dining hall. A FSU police report shows that Beierle told police he may have accidentally bumped into someone, but denied grabbing anyone.

In 2014, Beierle was charged with trespassing at FSU. He had been seen following an FSU volleyball coach near the campus gym and was told that he was banned from campus. A month later police found him at a campus restaurant and arrested him.

The owner of Hot Yoga Tallahassee, Brittani Whittington, is also a Central Florida native, Heavy.com reported. Posts on the studio’s Facebook page show she is originally from Apopka, according to the news site. Beierle, who had moved to the central Florida town of Deltona after getting a graduate degree from FSU, also appear to post a series of videos on YouTube in 2014 where he called women “whores” if they dated black men, said many black women were “disgusting” and described himself as a misogynist. He said promiscuous women deserved to be crucified and he suggested putting up land mines to keep people from crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. Mike Orgo, who was friends with Beierle on Facebook, said he met him back in 2011 at comedy night open microphone sessions held at a Tallahassee restaurant. He said that he did not know him well but said he “definitely seemed angry and on edge.”

Witnesses told police that Beierle posed as a customer to gain entrance to the studio, then started shooting without warning. Police have not yet said what kind of gun he used. Aloof and blank, “Mr. B.” wasn’t like other substitute teachers at Deltona Middle School. He was quiet and disengaged. He wouldn’t help students even when they asked for it. He dozed off at his desk in the back of the classroom. Students who derided him behind his back recorded him sleeping at his desk and posted it on Snapchat for all to see. A year before Scott Beierle opened fire inside a Tallahassee yoga studio, killing two people and wounding five others before killing himself, he worked as a substitute teacher for Volusia County Schools. 'Really weird aura': Beierle always had the same empty expression on his face all the time, Samantha said. If he wasn’t asleep in the back of the classroom, he was fiddling with his cell phone. The students seemed an afterthought. “He would never really smile, never gave off much except a really weird aura, I guess," she said. "He would put you on edge if he was talking with you or you were alone with him. A lot of the students in my class used to make fun of him."

Kelly Schulz, a spokeswoman for the Volusia County Schools, confirmed Sunday that Beierle worked as a substitute teacher for the district last year. She acknowledged the district will conduct a review of Beierle’s employment. But she said she couldn’t comment further until the district office opens on Monday.

Student encounters with Beierle: One day last year, Samantha found herself alone with Beierle after class. She said she wanted to ask him why he gave her an F on an assignment and why he was putting grades in the grade book, something she said substitute teachers weren’t supposed to do. He ended up changing her grade to a C. But she still found the encounter with Beierle off-putting. “I can’t really describe it,” she said. “He just intimidated me, made me feel uncomfortable. It wasn’t really anything he said. It was just his energy and the way he spoke.” ...

Mason Roberts, a 13-year-old eighth grader at Deltona and a friend of Samantha, said Beierle showed up as a substitute teacher in her language arts class once last year. “He was very quiet,” she said. “He seemed just out of it, I guess. He seemed very lazy. And even when we asked him a question, he seemed not to care. He was really creepy. He didn’t do things like a substitute would normally do.”

Parents question his hiring as teacher: Even though her class was well-behaved that day, Beierle gave them extra work to do outside the regular teacher’s lesson plans. “He seemed like he had more authority than a substitute teacher should have,” she said. “And it was just strange because we’d never had a substitute that gave us extra work. We never had a substitute who put grades in the grade book.”

Mason’s mom, Allison Roberts, said she was shocked Beierle was ever allowed to teach. Beierle had a history of arrests, but not convictions, for grabbing young women around the campus of Florida State University, where he earned master’s degrees. She found out about Beierle on Saturday night, after her daughter mentioned it at dinner.

“I was very shocked,” she said. “I was very upset. Someone with charges like that? How in the hell did he get in the classroom with my daughter? Anyone that’s got a history of being arrested for things such as that should absolutely not be around teenage girls or children period.”

Beierle also taught high school English and social studies in Anne Arundel County in Maryland from 2005 to 2007, according to WTOP of Washington, D.C. He resigned at the end of the 2006-2007 school year, district officials told the news station.

'A loner' banned from FSU: Beierle was arrested on two counts of simple battery in 2012 after two young women complained he grabbed their buttocks at the Suwannee Room dining hall at FSU. The music contains violent lyrics and song titles, including “Homicidal Impulse” and “American Whore.” Some of the music was available for purchase through at least one online retailer. One music video may have been inspired by his battery arrest and includes visuals of Taylor Swift, who was groped in a 2013 incident that became the subject of lawsuits.

A yoga student is being lauded as a hero for wrestling with a gunman who entered a yoga studio in Florida and began firing.
Joshua Quick spoke to ABC's Good Morning America on Sunday and said he grabbed Scott Paul Beierle's gun after it jammed, and hit him. Tallahassee Police have identified Beierle as the man who posed as a customer to get into the studio Hot Yoga Tallahassee during a Friday night class and started shooting, killing two and wounding six. Police say Beierle, 40, then turned the gun on himself but authorities have offered no motive in the attack.

Quick said Beierle was able to grab the gun back and then pistol-whip him.

"I jumped up as quickly as I could," said Quick, who had visible facial injuries. "I ran back over and the next thing I know I'm grabbing a broom, the only thing I can, and I hit him again."

It gave some in the studio time to flee.
