Former Pacelli Catholic School Teacher Held On Charge of 3rd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct

Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger says officers went to Pacelli Catholic School on Monday for what he describes as an “incident”. By mid-afternoon, officers arrested Gilles at her home. School officials tell us she was terminated yesterday. Chief Krueger says Gilles was taken to jail and was being held on a charge of third degree criminal sexual conduct.

Marsha Stenzel, school superintendent for the Diocese of Winona, said the victim is a minor. The school tipped police. Diocese spokesman Joel Hennessy added that the victim is a male and “is a student of ours.” A police officer assigned to Austin High School was asked first thing Monday to report to neighboring Pacelli High School regarding the teacher [Mary Gilles], Krueger said. UPDATE: Former Pacelli Teacher Accused of Sexual Relationship with Student

According to court documents, an Austin police officer went to Pacelli High School on Monday morning after a school administrator reported seeing e-mail correspondence between [Mary] Gilles and a 17-year-old male student. The e-mail reportedly contained some sexual content. The administrator said she found a password for the victim’s e-mail account and… after accessing the account… found numerous e-mails containing content concerning a sexual relationship. Some of the e-mails also reportedly referred to Gilles possibly being pregnant.


A detective with the Austin police department interviewed the 17-year-old, who said that Gilles is his math teacher and that they began having sexual intercourse in February of this year at Gilles’ home in rural Austin. According to the documents, the teenager says he and Gilles had sexual intercourse “four or five times” between February and June and twice more after the boy returned to school in September. The reportedly also engaged in other sexual contact. The court complaint says Gilles admitted, during an interview with investigators, that she was having a sexual relationship with the boy and that she knew he was 17-years-old.​

Charges: Former Catholic School Teacher Admits To Sex With Student

According to a criminal complaint, police were called to the school Monday after suspicions arose that [Mary] Gilles was having sex with a student. A school administrator told police she’d seen emails between Gilles and the student, and their contents were sexual in nature. The administrator told police she saw the emails after she began looking at the student’s school account when she got a “gut feeling” something was wrong. While she didn’t find anything suspicious in the student’s school email, she did find a password for another account. She then accessed that account and found correspondence with Gilles that was sexual in nature.

Police say an officer looked at the emails, one of which spoke of Gilles possibly being pregnant.

An investigator met with the student, the complaint states. In an interview, the student said he had a close relationship with Gilles and had been having sex with her since February. He said they first had sex at her house and that they’d had intercourse about seven times in total. Police also interviewed Gilles. She admitted to investigators that her relationship with the student began in February or March and that they had sex about once a month since then. She said she knew the student was 17.​

What an incredibly stupid school administrator, who committed two crimes in her blundering attempt to gather evidence:

1. Accessing the students email
2. Using a stolen password to gain improper access to the student's Yahoo account

If this were a public school, accessing the student's email without a warrant would quite likely jeopardize the prosecution, not to mention breaking into the Yahoo account. However, criminal acts on the part of non-government actors generally don't taint evidence. Still I predict that the defense attorneys are going to get a lot of leverage from her over-zealous bungling.

This underscores why law enforucement officials should always take over these investigations at the first suspicion of criminal misconduct.

Fired Catholic high school teacher may be pregnant with student’s child: charges

A former Catholic high school math teacher's alleged months-long affair with a 17-year-old student has landed her behind bars — while possibly pregnant with the boy's baby.

Mary F. Gilles, 28, was fired from Pacelli High School in Austin, Minn. Tuesday after allegedly confessing to the sexual trysts which began in her home back in February, according to the Star Tribune citing the felony charges.

The educator's arrest reportedly follows an internal investigation by a school administrator whose suspicions grew after seeing the pair together long after school had closed. The school administrator tapped into the student's school email account and after finding nothing suspicious, searched his personal email. There she discovered numerous emails with "sexual relationship content" as well as more recent emails revealing Gilles' suspicions that she may be pregnant.​
