Very good editorial on deleting online reports of past misdeeds:

Do people have the right to be forgotten?

The internet never forgets. But should it? It’s a question that I actually have to deal with on a fairly regular basis. Not weekly and I’d say not even monthly, but several times per year, I get emails from people who send me a link and want something removed from kpcnews.com. This week, I actually got two such requests — one from a woman who was arrested on meth charges in Kendallville back in 2008 and another from a woman who ended up in a jail booking listing in Whitley County in 2019. Most often, the requests we get are ...

I personally believe people have the right to be forgotten. There are so many people in this world that get arrested off of speculation and accusations. Arresting people for something is easier than ever. Especially, when it comes to teachers. They are quick to assume things just to save them from a lawsuit. I believe that if you go through the court process and are found not guilty/acquitted of your charges you should be allowed to have your stuff taken off the internet.

Absolutely. Not respecting a dismissed / non-guilty verdict is against the principles that this nation was founded on.

I definitely believe that some people deserve the right to be forgotten. Every situation is not the same. I know that our society has certain value systems based on specific “bad” things that people do. But I find it extremely unfair and cruel to try to keep a human’s personal Advancement hostage by keeping a story published that the courts say to destroy. The reality is keeping some of these stories up on forums like this is not about a greater good to keep “people” informed, it’s simply about personal gain. Controversial stories get eyes on pages, that’s the bottom line.
If we think from a more human perspective, people have families to take care, so is it fair to hold someone hostage when all you have to do is press the delete button? Think about it, some of the worst criminals have been forgotten because it was before the age of social media and the internet, while others who may have made embarrassing mistakes may never be forgotten because of forums like this.

That's the generation we're living: the one that cares more about money and prestige over human lives.

Everyone has a family. This forum and its ideals have no positive function for any facet of society.

If this post gets erased, at least it served a good cause for anyone who had a chance to read it.
