    Teacher who resigned to join school board charged $1,000 penalty

    When veteran educator Rene Ramirez was appointed to the all-volunteer governing board of the Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District, it not only cost him his teaching job, he also had to pay the district $1,000 in damages. Ramirez, who formally joined the school board on Jan. 1, said in an interview that he was aware that if elected, he would have to resign from teaching math and science at Calabasas School in Rio Rico, which is governed by SCVUSD.
