    Teacher charged with sex with student has license suspended


    Stephen Stahl, the former wrestling coach and suspended dean of students at Coughlin High School, has had his teaching license suspended while he awaits trial on charges alleging he had sex with a student in a classroom closet. The state Professional Standards and Practices Commission announced Wednesday that Stahl, 47, had his certificates in instruction and administration "immediately suspended" July 17 because he is charged with corruption of minors.     Coughlin High School teacher suspended over alleged inappropriate behavior

    The independent investigation began after a jury in January 2015 convicted Stephen Stahl of having sex with a 16-year-old girl in 2004 when he was a Coughlin teacher. The district appointed Scranton attorney Frank Tunis to conduct the independent investigation, which has not concluded, Wendolowski said. Stahl, 49, was sentenced last March to six to 23 months in jail after a jury convicted him of corruption of minors.


    According to trial testimony, teacher Brian Hampel served as a “lookout” while Stahl had sex with the girl in a classroom. Hampel testified at Stahl’s trial and denied any involvement or knowledge.

    The former Wilkes-Barre Area School District teacher who was accused of covering up a fellow teacher’s student sex scandal was sentenced Wednesday to house arrest after pleading guilty in his fifth drunken driving case.
