Let keep the language suitable for the dinner table with Respess & Dufresne on the 6 p.m. news in the background. Seriously guys, I have some issues with compliance for advertising programs. Some of you might not care, but I do.

The delay was because her attorney had only been on the case formally for one day and so requested a routine continuance.

According to T-P(Nola.Com), the arraignment continuance was due to a "scheduling conflict" that Dufresne's newly hired attorney cited. In addition, the DA's office is still "wrapping up" the processing of evidence and will be finalizing the charges next week. Everyone on this thread seems to agree that Dufresne's father and his influence are impacting how this case is playing out.

But many questions remain that makes one wonder about the legal process in this case:

Seeking treatment for mental illness immediately prior to her arrest? Refusing to speak to investigating detectives during the interview? Hiring an attorney just hours before your arraignment hearing who just happens to have a seminar to attend? Not resigning from your teaching position at DHS? Why has the school board not met to terminate Shelley and Rachel? And yes, as John Smith cited in his post, what about Dufresne's husband Wesley? Is he also following Judge St. Pierre's legal advice and direction? Too many questions remain unanswered.....

The commonality in all high profile teacher sex scandals seems to be legal maneuvering in order to delay the case until it's off the public's radar. I guess the one consolation is that Shelley and Rachel both will have freshly-sliced (11/25) felony charges on their plates for Thanksgiving dinner.

And come to think of it, what perfect timing on the new arraignment hearing date! America will be focused on the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend and not some sex scandal down in the bayou. And for those who will see it on the news the day before Thanksgiving, many will say "Mr. DA, how could you do this to poor Shelley and Rachel right before the Holiday???"

great job so-far Judge Emile St. Pierre!!!!!

Yeah, have to admit the running out for mental treatment as the first course of business was a fairly obvious ploy to position herself for a diminished capacity defense or leniency. A definite "oh, give me a break" eye roller when I first read it.

Refusing to say anything is always in the guilty persons best interests, can't begrudge her there. Respess should have done the same, at least until she had legal counsel by her side.

I didn't realize the school board hadn't terminated them yet...that does seem surprising. I mean, nobody seems to be suggesting the sex didn't actually happen or that the teachers are being framed. Apparently the board believes in exercising an abundance of caution...at least, that is, with a teacher they know is very very well connected legally.

I was thinking the same thing about Judge St. Pierre's discussing things with Mr. Dufresne after her arrest. I'd agree there is little doubt he's advising/steering him. The fact that he hasn't made any supportive statements regarding his wife speaks volumes. If I was the judge and knew he was planning on leaving his wife, I'd tell him to do nothing and say nothing along those lines until after she was found guilty or plea bargained. And if I knew hubby was aware of the Shelley/Rachel team and participated with his wife in a mutual quest for sexual adventure outside their marriage, again, I'd tell him to do and say nothing until after the trial. But if I knew hubby was not a participant in Shelley's extracurricular activities, and that he was intent on forgiving her and standing by her side......oh, heck yes, get that guy in front of a microphone as quickly as you can!

An interesting article from the victim's perspective about the fall out after a tryst with a female teacher (when the male student was 16) ruined his life. He is now filing suit. Just another reminder that the fantasy and the reality can be very different things when it comes to female teachers sexually abusing male students.

Both Shelley and Rachel come from wealthy families so it would not be a surprise if the victim in this case files a lawsuit against them and possibly also the St. Charles Parish school district. Very deep pockets indeed.

    Indeed, expect it!

Oral sex in a recent D.C. case turned into a multi-million dollar lawsuit in scarcely a week. (If this link breaks when I merge the updates for that case, please use the report button at top left.)

Apparently Dufresne is asking that her house arrest restrictions be relaxed so she can help her husband shuttle her kids around to school and appointments, and so she can attend jazzersize classes. She basically wants to be scott-free to come and go between 7am to 8pm, and only be under house arrest for the remainder of the evening. The jazzersize is supposed to be part and parcel to her over all mental health treatment for depression and a mood disorder (AKA - her pitch for a temporary insanity defense). Apparently we are not supposed to worry about the jazzersize class because it's "mostly women her own age".

Yes, of course, she'll stay out of trouble if she jus pals around with other females in her Jazzersize class.....btw, wasn't Respess a female? The pure arrogance, self-centeredness and recklessness associated with her having acted as instigator and ringleader in a conspiracy with another teacher to sexually abuse one of her students, apparently, should carry no weight in whether or not she is capable of behaving properly, or deserving of walking the streets until this matter is settled.

I say, if she is so mentally screwed up to where she couldn't stop herself from behaving as she did, then she doesn't belong on the street. If she's not that screwed up, then drop the "my mental health made me do it" pretense, and just admit you simply succumbed to the same compulsive desire for sexual adventure that swingers, wife swappers, porn stars, group sex aficionados and the like do. That is....she's no different than any other over sexed middle aged housewife who sneaks around behind her husbands back (or more likely, with his knowledge and participation). It's just that most swingers, adulterers, etc. generally don't target underage high school students for partners and then solicit their adult playmates to hop on the pogo stick with her. I guess we are supposed to forget all that, because......well, just because she's pretty and her dad's a judge, I guess.

This fine pillar of society should just be grateful she's not sitting in jail instead of asking for concessions and acting like she's a victim. If she's having problems taking care of her kids, then perhaps she should ask whomever she pawned them off to on those multiple occasions she sexually abused this student. She didn't appear to have daycare issues then....

Teacher charged with sex with student has hearing

Two Destrehan High School teachers, 24-year-old Rachel Respess and 32-year-old Shelley Dufresne, face charges in both St. Charles and Jefferson parishes in connection with allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old student. There was a status hearing in Jefferson Parish court Monday for Respess. She was not there, and her attorney said it took less than a minute to note that there has basically been no change in the case.

Obviously, Respess's case hinges entirely upon the disposition of the ringleader Dufresne's case. Charges in Dufresne's case (or dismissal thereof) are scheduled for 11/25 hence the "no disposition" status in Respess's case and it's continuance to 1/8/2015. Pushing Respess's case back greatly reduces the chances of her "spilling the beans" on Dufresne and taking a plea deal. Hopefully charges are filed against Dufresne on 11/25 and Judge Simon denies the motion to relax restrictions of the house arrest. Although I'm afraid that will not happen to Princess Shelley two days before Thanksgiving! I'm sure the filing of charges in her case will also be delayed until the new year and restrictions relaxed on her house arrest due to the Holidays. After all, "Shelley's kids will be home on winter break and they will be also under house arrest if Mommy can't take them out".....I'm certain Dufresne's attorney will use that angle effectively on 11/25.

This whole case smacks of good old-fashioned Southern privilege and entitlement along with intimidation of the legal system. And I thought "Boss Hogg" in the "Dukes of Hazzard" was bad ;)

Teacher accused of having a threesome with student, 16, and her colleague asks judge to ease her house arrest so she could attend Jazzercise class 'to help with her depression'
    • Shelley Dufresne, 32, a married mother of three, was arrested just days after school officials learned of the allegations
    • She posed in a bare midriff for a diet ad claiming she had lost 10 pounds in 75 days
    • English teacher Rachel Respess, 24, who uses the name CajunBabe, is accused of taking part in sexual tryst at her home, which may have been videotaped
    • Booking records state Dufresne began passionately kissing her co-worker as Respress had sex with the teenager
A former 32-year-old Louisiana teacher charged with having group sex with a 16-year-old student and her 24-year-old colleague has asked a judge to ease the conditions of her house arrest so she could attend an exercise class. A lawyer for Shelly Dufresne appeared in court Monday for a status conference, asking to allow the married mother of three to partake in a Jazzercise program as part for her treatment for depression. Attorney Deanne Williams also asked Judge Lauren Lemmon to ease Dufresne's house arrest so she could take her children, ages 3, 5, and 7, to school, doctor's appointments and extra-curricular activities.

    ...

Respess, a pretty blonde who used the name 'CajunBabe' for her email addresses, decided she needed freedom away from her parents' upscale 3,900-sq. ft. home in Destrehan and moved 12 miles into a cramped apartment with peeling paint.

    ...

Dufresne ... was featured in a diet ad for xlr8fitness claiming she had lost 10 pounds in 75 days, MailOnline has learned. She posed in a bare midriff for the before and after photos.

    ...

Cops also believe the threesome was Dufresne's idea and she 'propositioned' her younger colleague with her plan. Respess told police she was aware that Dufresne was bringing the boy to her apartment for three-way sex. A police report says that while Respess was having intercourse with the boy, Dufresne 'began intimately kissing (Respess) in an attempt to arouse all parties involved, all who were complete(ly) disrobed.'

How many of these cases have the accused that posted bail under house arrest? And if some of the restrictions are relaxed, how is that an iron clad guarantee that the relaxation only came about because of the accused father's line of work and/or an intimidated legal system? If I'm Dufrense, which obviously I'm not, I'd be asking for the house arrest stuff to be dropped or relaxed as well. And as an observer, I certainly don't see anything underhanded about it.

One of the news reports I read said that Shelley attends her outpatient therapy sessions 5 days a week for 4 hours each day. Four hours each day, Monday through Friday? Really?!! If she is THAT messed up to require 20 hours a week of "intensive mental therapy" for her alleged depression and mood disorder, then it seems to me (given the nature of her crime in enticing, encouraging, planning and spearheading this event for all involved) allowing her to walk the streets beyond what is currently allowed would be a risk to the public safety, particularly to the local high school community.

My questions regarding her "illness" and treatment:

    - Did anyone (people without bias in favor of Shelley) notice symptoms of her severe mood disorder and depression, or any associated behavioral issues, prior to this event? One would think someone requiring that much therapy would have had noticeable outward behavioral signs that something was amiss long before this event.

    - How arbitrary is the degree of therapy she is undergoing? I mean, who was driving the decision that she undergo THAT much therapy? Some of these places offer a menu of treatment plans that the PATIENT chooses based on his/her financial ability or perceived need. That is, if the doctor suggested she only needed a Toyota treatment plan but the family was insistent on a more intensive Maserati treatment plan....I think that's a significant tidbit of info. It would be nice to have an opinion from an independent psychiatrist/psychologist of how severe a mental disorder needs to be to require that much intensive therapy time.

    - Does the person providing this intensive therapy have a history of also providing expert testimony in support of individuals undergoing criminal proceedings?

    - Who recommended this particular mental health provider to Shelley and why? Did she already have a patient relationship with them? Was her doctor chosen because of his/her success in helping people with criminal behavior get better, or his/her success in helping people with criminal behavior stay out of jail?

If she really is sick and needs this degree of help, I'm glad she's getting it and hope the courts take that into account in the legal procedings. But I'm sorry, none of this passes the smell test in my opinion. The timing and degree of therapy appears to be more about setting up a legal defense as opposed to legitimate mental health needs. Just saying....

There's nothing at all wrong with Dufresne and this "therapy" is simply part of the defense platform that Judge Daddy is building and most likely funding. Hopefully the DA is lining up psychiatrists who will be able to validate this in court.
Shelley is a pathetic spoiled brat who's not even smart enough to "lay low under the radar" as charges against her are being finalized. What about Respess??? We've heard nothing about her since the arrest...
