Destrehan High School teacher Shelley Dufresne had 'prior sexual encounters' with student, police say

Among the assertions in the brief reports filed by Kenner police:

• Dufresne had sexual contact with the student more than once before their alleged ménage à trois Sept. 12 with teacher Rachel Respess, 24, at Respess' Kenner apartment. The police use of the plural "prior sexual encounters" suggests two or more earlier incidents, whereas the public record to date had established only one other allegation of sex between Dufresne and the student.
• Dufresne "enticed and transported" the teen to Respass' apartment, with the purpose of engaging in sexual acts, and she "approached (Respess) in order to proposition her into joining the sexual encounter." Respess told detectives she was aware that Dufresne was bringing the boy to her apartment for sex.
• At the apartment, the boy told police, he had sex with both women. While Respess was having intercourse with him, Dufresne "began intimately kissing (Respess) in an attempt to arouse all parties involved, all who were complete(ly) disrobed."

That's because the teachers' arrests and the details emerging from an investigation into allegations that they engaged in group sex with a 16-year-old student have made international news and generated millions of page views on news websites. Their names are trending on a New York news website and their pictures -- mainly mug shots -- are numerous on the web. Indeed, at one point Dufresne's name was the third "Shelley" on a Google search, behind the actors Shelley Duval and Shelley Henning.​

Destrehan High School teachers accused of group sex with student at Kenner apartment

Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser said the ménage à trois happened at Respess' apartment at 1354 W. Esplanade Ave. Respess, accompanied by her attorney, surrendered to authorities Wednesday at about 10:30 a.m. Dufresene had already been arrested Tuesday for allegedly having sex with the boy at a home in Montz, where she lives. Kenner police booked both women with carnal knowledge of a juvenile, indecent behavior with a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, Glaser said.​

Teachers accused of group sex with student post bond

Kenner police Sgt. Brian McGregor says 32-year-old Shelly Dufresne and 24-year-old Rachel Respess left the Jefferson Parish jail early Thursday. They are accused of having sex with a 16-year-old boy at Respess' Kenner apartment.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the 9/12 tryst happened after the football team beat the (Helen) Cox Cougars?

 

I missed that nuance -- the on-line discussions I've been following (Tiger Droppings forum, you'll have to Google it, some of the content is a bit too risque to link) just refer to the town name (Harvey), not the high school name, though I might have missed a few references in the couple hundred pages that have been posted there.

 

For those applauding the "lucky kid", etc., (unfortunately there are a good number who are), this was reported by the Waco Tribune regarding a recent case of teacher sex abuse in Texas:

“It’s really a tragic situation because this young man will be affected for a long time,” he said. “He was being manipulated by an older person. “Once it become physical, that’s when he started having problems. He became very withdrawn, very quiet, and he just wasn’t himself. His parents noticed that.”

Some children will not be affected by such abuse; many or most will be.

 

This is the 2nd time in a year that Destrehan High School has been under a national spotlight. About 11 months ago five assistant coaches were busted in a football cheating scandal and they were force to their win against the South Lafourche Tarpons.

Additionally, there have been two prior sex abuse cases: Troy W. Quinn at R. K. Smith Middle School in Luling and Byron Toups at Destrehan High School.

Destrehan teacher sex scandal illustrates persistent stereotypes about gender, age

A host of professional observers — including law enforcement officials, therapists, sociologists and child welfare advocates — say that if the allegations are true, it’s obvious a crime was committed. At the same time, they understand why the court of public opinion seems less universal in its outrage than in some other cases where teachers have had sex with students.

In many ways, the student’s alleged behavior in this case “is on the spectrum of gender scripts that it’s not this completely anomalous pathological behavior,” said Marcus Kondkar, a sociology professor at Loyola University, noting that the two women in the alleged three-way sexual encounter were attractive and young, although still a good deal older than the student. “It’s actually fairly close to the way we idealize masculinity.”

“I think everybody agrees that they crossed the line,” Kondkar said. “Now, I think the reason why we’re having a more complicated reaction to this than we would if it were two male teachers is because of our gender scripts. We have these gender scripts around sexuality, and in some ways, what this victim has done is sort of basically just met the standard of an idealized form of masculinity for a 16-year-old.”
