Lodi teachers faces DWI charge, Bergen officer in critical condition after Route 46 crash

Officer Daniel Breslin, a 39-year-old father of two, was listed in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center after undergoing surgery for what police described as a “significant head injury.”

Breslin, who was on duty in a marked police sport utility vehicle, had pulled up alongside another county police vehicle operated by Officer Frank Canaje, around 1:50 a.m. Saturday on Route 46 west in front of an Enterprise Rent-A-Car outlet. Canaje had pulled over onto the right shoulder because he was having problems with his police radio, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said in a news release.

As the two were talking, a 2012 Ford Fusion driven by Michael Ettz of Lodi struck Breslin’s vehicle from behind, Molinelli said, adding that the emergency lights were flashing in Breslin’s vehicle.
