Mahwah Officer Michael Connington was dispatched to an illegal dumping call at the Polo Club off Ramapo Valley Road Tuesday where he found a Lodi recreational vehicle parked by the Ramapo River, nine juveniles and Fusco. The juveniles told the officer they were part of a rocket club from Lodi High School and were flying rockets in the area. Connington recognized one of the juveniles and Fusco from a surveillance video he viewed at roll call about a theft that occurred in mid-October. Fusco identified himself as a teacher and the advisor for the club and was questioned about the theft of hunting equipment. He told police he took the items because he thought they were illegal, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said Wednesday. The items, which were on private property, included one that had a camera embedded in it. “Little did they know, when they were looking at this, it recorded their images,” Batelli said.

After initially claiming that he removed the hunting equipment because he thought it was illegal, Fusco admitted that he had taken the equipment and given it to a friend, police say. According to Batelli, Fusco also admitted that he used his underage students to help him carry the hunting equipment off of the Mahwah property.
