Boston Globe: Newton teacher charged with child pornography resigns (Feb 1 2012)

The Newton teacher who was arrested last month on child pornography charges resigned late Tuesday, Schools Superintendent David Fleishman said. David Ettlinger, who taught second grade at Underwood Elementary School, turned in his letter of resignation the day before a scheduled hearing on his termination.​

A former Newton teacher facing state and federal child pornography charges was a camp counselor in Westwood during the mid-to-late 1990s, an official at the Jewish Community Center confirmed Friday. David Ettlinger, who pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to the alleged charges in superior court, was a counselor for a couple of years until about 1997 at the Jewish Community Center's Camp Grossman, which straddles the Westwood-Dover town line on Dover Road. "It is factual and it was 15 years ago," Carol Trager, Vice President of Strategy and Marketing for the JCC, confirmed to Westwood Patch on Friday.​

A month after investigators arrested an elementary school teacher [David Ettlinger] on child pornography charges, School Superintendent David Fleishman announced last night that a task force set up to review Newton’s hiring policies will be made up of the city’s legal, police, human resources, and parks and recreation departments. The committee will look at policies regarding background checks and hiring practices and report its findings in June, Fleishman said last night at a meeting of the School Committee. Aldermen and school board members will not serve on the panel, he said.​

Jessica Pastore said David Ettlinger, 34, of Brighton, had non-pornographic photos of students in his collection. “As part of the investigation, we and the Newton PD were made aware of pictures that appeared to have been taken by the defendant of students at the school where the defendant worked,” Pastore said in an email to the TAB. She said Newton Police notified parents whose children were identified in the photos and that they were non-pornographic, and therefore non-criminal.​
