    Cranston ex-cop suspected in thefts from unlocked cars during Smithfield church service

    A retired Cranston police officer who has also worked as a teacher in Johnston was arrested in a church parking lot Sunday morning after witnesses reported a man rifling through unlocked cars. Smithfield police officers were called to St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, a news release from Lt. Gerald P. Pezzullo Jr. said. Witness descriptions matched those of someone seen stealing from unlocked vehicles. Officers found him in the lot, with a stolen wallet and more than 50 gift cards worth from $5 to $200.     Retired officer arrested in church parking lot with wallet, gift cards taken from cars, police say

    A retired Rhode Island police officer was arrested in a church parking lot Sunday morning after witnesses reported a man rifling through unlocked cars. Carmine Giarrusso was found by Smithfield officers in the lot of St. Philip Catholic Church, according to a news released from Lt. Gerald P. Pezzullo Jr. Police were called to the church on Sunday morning after witnesses saw a man stealing from unlocked vehicles.
