Christopher Shane Garrett had been charged with improper relationship between a student and an educator. The offense was alleged to have occurred over spring break two years ago at the coach’s house in White Bluff Resort and involved a 17-year-old high school woman. The complaint on the charge wasn’t filed with Whitney police until June of 2010. Charles Breaux of Corsicana served as the special prosecutor on the case. District Attorney Dan Dent has said in the past that the case was delayed by DNA testing submitted by the Whitney Police Department. Garrett and fellow coach Nicholas Bird were initially arrested on charges of false report to a peace officer and purchase/furnish alco-hol to a minor. The cases reportedly involved the 17-year-old, in addition to a 16-year-old high school girl and a 20-year-old man, who was a former student at Whitney. Those misdemeanor charges were officially filed earlier this month through County Attorney Mark Pratt’s office before the two-year statute of limitations expired. Both men were initially suspended with pay by Whitney ISD, but later left school-district employment.
