    Birmingham firefighter asks why segregationist mayor has streets named for him

    Birmingham Fire and Rescue Lt. George Cowgill wrote an essay and open letter addressed to Mayor Randall Woodfin this week questioning why Birmingham has two streets named after former Mayor Art Hanes, who defended racial segregation while he was in office from 1961-63. As mayor in 1961, Hanes closed city parks in response to a federal order declaring the city’s segregation laws unconstitutional. Hanes served on a three-person city commission with Eugene “Bull” Connor, the public safety commissioner who used fire hoses and police dogs against civil rights protesters. Hanes, Connor and J.T.
