Court absolves former teacher’s union leader Elba Esther Gordillo

Elba Esther Gordillo, former teacher’s union leader known as La Maestra (the Teacher) was charged in February 2015 with embezzling $200 million USD from union funds to pay for her lavish lifestyle. She was notorious for her $5,000 Hermes bags and expensive plastic surgeries in California clinics. Three residences connected to Gordillo were identified in California. The main one, where “La Maestra” spent most of her time, is a $4.7 million house on a cul-de-sac in Coronado Cays, near San Diego, that features a private dock with a yatch and heli-port. The flamboyant former leader of Mexico’s powerful Sindicato Nacional ...

A Mexican bureaucrat and his family’s $8.2 million Miami condo spending spree

On a single day in 2005, an official of Mexico’s powerful teachers’ union and his relatives spent $6.3 million on 11 luxury condos at a high-rise in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood. Bernardo Quezada Salas, now a congressman in Mexico, might have paid cash for the luxury units at the Espirito Santo Plaza. The deals were done through Florida companies owned by some combination of Quezada Salas, his wife, his sister-in-law and his brother-in-law. The year before the Brickell deals, his wife, Jessica Peredo Rincon, had paid $1.1 million for a two-bedroom unit at the swanky Setai in South Beach. Then, in ...

Teachers’ union boss who was charged with embezzling US $200mn is back

There were high expectations for a federal offensive against corruption in 2013 when authorities arrested the powerful head of Latin America’s biggest trade union. The case against Elba Esther Gordillo was “solid,” said the attorney general at the time. Last August, the former president of the SNTE union was freed from jail after a court deemed that evidence of money laundering and organized crime was insufficient. The “solid” case now appears to have been a sham to portray the new government of Enrique Peña Nieto as being tough on corruption. Yesterday, Gordillo, widely known as “La Maestra” (The Teacher), announced ...

Ex-teachers’ union boss gets her property back; AMLO denies pact

President López Obrador has denied that a decision to return assets seized from former teachers’ union boss Elba Esther Gordillo is the result of a “shady deal” between her and the government as claimed by opposition parties. The newspaper Reforma revealed yesterday that the federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) had returned three properties, three cars, books and art to the former SNTE union chief. Gordillo’s access to seven bank accounts that were frozen when she was arrested on corruption charges in 2013 was also reinstated. The ex-union leader commonly known as “La Maestra” (The Teacher) spent almost five years in ...

A pact between Elba Esther Gordillo and Andrés Manuel López Obrador?

[Elba Esther] Gordillo was returned 7 bank accounts, real estate properties, works of art and vehicles, after the prosecution closed all inquiries against him What’s a little prison time between friends? Correction no actual prison time, all theater. Yesterday, political actors of PAN, PRD and Movimiento Ciudadano, considered that the return of assets to the former chief of Mexico’s teacher union, was the result of a ruling by a Federal Judge, therefore a sign that the Government of López Obrador does not fight corruption and puts forward the alliance that wove with the former SNTE leader in the past elections. ...
